Onehunga foreshore road closures: Information for cyclists

Onehunga Foreshore Restoration Project
A map of the alternative route

Orpheus Drive in Onehunga will be closed for 24 hours from 6.30am on Saturday, 15 November.

It will re-open by 6.30am on Sunday.

The closure is needed so the steel truss of the Onehunga Foreshore Restoration Project’s new pedestrian/cycle bridge can be transported and lifted into place above State Highway 20.

The lift will only go ahead if the weather is good.

Cyclists will need to use alternative routes (see map above) – you can use the pedestrian/cycle bridges at Beachcroft Ave and at Onehunga Harbour Road, which will remain open.

SH20 will also be closed for 12 hours at Onehunga overnight, from 8pm – 8am, with detours starting at 7pm.

The truss weighs over 100 tonnes, is 80m long and 6m wide, so transporting and lifting it will be quite a challenge. The bridge is being built in stages, with the deck, cladding and carved panels added at a later date.

The Onehunga Foreshore Restoration Project is creating 6.8 hectares of parkland and beaches to provide enduring public access to the Manukau Harbour. The new bridge will span SH20 and link the pedestrian/cycle paths in the new park to Onehunga Bay Reserve.

The $28 million project, which has been funded by the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board and the New Zealand Transport Agency, is due for completion mid-2015.
