Auckland’s cycle numbers grow fastest where cycleways are built

Bike Auckland

Auckland Transport has just released the latest “snapshot” cycle counts undertaken in March 2011. The biggest gains were again at some of the already most popular locations, with Tamaki Drive remaining the front runner, up 13% over last year to 1,059 cyclists. Other big increases were on the Northwestern Cycleway at St Lukes Road (up 19% to 690) and on Ian McKinnon Drive (up 50% to 560). While former Auckland City, and especially the Waitemata Ward, had many of the busiest sites, other good increases were found at places like Taharoto Road / Northcote Road (+34% to 307) in the former North Shore City, or Central Park Drive (+6% to 212) in former Waitakere City.

Over the whole region, the gains are more modest, with an increase of 3% over last year, to a total of 13,406 cyclists – counted at 82 locations during five and a half hours of counting.

Cycle Action sees these results as a clear sign of “build it and they will come”. Aucklanders want dedicated and safe cycling facilities – off-road where possible. And where they get such new facilities, like on the new Kingsland section of the Northwestern Cycleway – or when existing roads are improved for cycling, like on Tamaki Drive – Aucklanders will come out to (ride to) work and play.

We encourage Auckland Transport and NZTA to use these newest numbers and push forward with more cycle paths – throughout the region, but most of all, on the key routes of the Regional Cycle Network.
