When in Rome…

When in Rome…

Bike Auckland

…do not do as the Romans did.

Rather, look at what they just did – come to their senses. Realise that having cars able to go everywhere, even right through the heart of their historic city and past the colosseum, wasn’t the best thing – for either architecture or city life.

So they banned cars on the Fori Imperiali – one of the main roads in the city centre, which also cuts through some of the most famous sites.

As Rome’s new mayor says:

“I don’t think any other city in the world … would have turned the Colosseum, probably the most famous monument on the planet, into a roundabout.”

The chap (who apparently makes a habit of cycling to Council meetings, too), seems to know what’s really going on, even though he’s facing some heated opposition. Wonder what he would make of Auckland – we seem to have turned half of our city into a (gridlocked) roundabout!

At least some plans to reduce car traffic – and actually close some lanes or even streets – are afoot in Auckland too.
