A personal take on the synergy between the bike movement and the Pride movement, by Sue Cardwell, Bike Auckland’s Communications Director.
Pride and bikes are a natural match. Both celebrate visibility, freedom, and collective joy.

This February, Pride Month, show up, ride with Pride, and help celebrate a future where everyone belongs.
Bikes have always been woven into the fabric of activism. Throughout history, bicycles have been tools of change. Suffragettes rode them as symbols of autonomy. Organisers used them to move quickly through cities, spreading information and gathering people. Environmental and justice movements embraced them as low‑carbon, people‑powered protest long before “sustainability” became a buzzword.

That activist lineage fits beautifully with Pride. Both movements are about taking up space in ways that challenge the status quo. Both are nested in the belief that public space should be safe, joyful, and welcoming for everyone. When bikes roll through Pride, they turn that belief into something you can see and feel – a moving reminder that streets are for all of us.
Bikes make Pride even more fun. They add a sense of shared forward momentum: progress powered by people, together.
So this February, Pride Month, whether you’re part of the rainbow community or simply an ally who loves vibrant, joyful streets, come join one of the bike events happening soon.
