We have heard from a great friend of Cycle Action, Claire Pascoe, (based in the US) about a huge event in L A which opened the streets for thousands of cyclists.
We tried a tiny one earlier this year in Auckland – but look at this – Cyclovia LA style !
Claire says thousands of cyclists took to the streets on the recent CiclAvia – and another is planned in October this year.
If LA can do it at least twice a year, and other cities can close high profile streets for walking and cycling, surely Auckland can celebrate our harbour by making Quay St and Tamaki Drive free of vehicles on a couple of weekend days.
Auckland Harbour and its waterfront are cherished by the people of Auckland. They play a huge part in defining the character of our city – while the term is sadly over-used, there’s no doubt that Auckland’s harbourside setting is up there with the best in the world.
It’s true we have Around The Bays – but that’s about pounding the pavement and pressing the flesh. Why are we so slow and reluctant to create events for people to have unrestricted and relaxed access to enjoy walking and two wheeled travel and recreation on Tamaki Drive and Quay St ?
