Inner West street improvements history

The Inner West Network were three fabulous street improvement projects initially proposed in 2016, which link to each other and into the existing cycle network. All together they connect Grey Lynn and Point Chevalier to each other and into the surrounding areas.

Map showcases the three routes. Note that due to political delay the construction dates were pushed out.

The three routes are:

  • Point Chevalier to Westmere Improvements (including Meola Road)
Is currently under construction. The construction timeline says it will be completed by mid 2025, but it appears to be ahead of schedule. Point Chevalier and Meola Road cycleways are both open to be ridden, but the roundabouts at either end of Meola Road are still under construction so take care. We will be making a big fuss once it’s officially complete!
  • Grey Lynn and Westmere Improvements (also known as Waitematā Safer Routes).
A version of the second part of this route will be delivered as part of scheduled road renewals in mid 2025, reducing the price of delivery. It has been renamed ‘Surrey Crescent and Old Mill Road Improvements’ and you can find out more information about it here.
  • Great North Road Improvements (up to the Grey Lynn shops)
After several stops and starts the Great North Road contract has been awarded, and shovels should be in the ground in January 2025. We will have a celebration once this finally happens!

We will continue to push for these projects to be the best they can be, and to complete the missing link at Grey Lynn shops.

In the blogs below you can follow the history of these projects and a glimpse of the thousands of hours community individuals and organisations have put into making this happen.

We’ve shared your stories over the years, to show the immense diversity, enthusiasm, demand and sheer potential for everyday cycling by all kinds of Aucklanders.
