Never Too Old – taking a spin with the YMCA

Never Too Old - taking a spin with the YMCAOn a sunny Thursday in February, I took a spin around the city and out along Tamaki Drive with a group of senior Aucklanders on bikes, the first in a series of planned monthly rides. The convivial group has emerged from the city branch of the YMCA’s Never2Old fitness programme, under the guidance of Clare Lynch, with some helpful e-bike training along the way. The group has a ‘no rider left behind’ policy, and the rides are organized along safe routes at comfortable speeds, and culminate in an enjoyable lunch. I’d only intended to meet the group on Lightpath and say hello, but found myself zooming down Grafton Gully and then biking round the waterfront, hanging …

The Hotties – so much more than a ‘Girl Group’

The Hotties - so much more than a 'Girl Group'The Hotties is a terrific name for a diverse group of women on road bikes. Of course, the name is more to do with the support the group receives from HOT Cycles in St Heliers (and its sibling shop Mt Eden Cycles) than a term of self-congratulation. But, as ride leader Emma Hadley explains below, congratulations are indeed in order… Started in September 2015, the Hotties are an amazing and inclusive group of women, from students to grandparents, whose numbers have gone from strength to strength. What I love about the Hotties is that we have become much more than just a biking group. Everyone has become great friends despite (or maybe because of) the …

How to go Friding – and a Friding challenge!

How to go Friding - and a Friding challenge!Friding is one of those ideas that strikes you with the force of a revelation: Riding. On a Friday. “The best day, the best way.” Couldn’t be simpler. It’s not formal, it’s not planned, it’s just giving people permission. Once a week, take your bike. And yet, as its inventors Nick McFarlane and Greg Wood say in a great article in today’s Herald, it’s extremely powerful too: “Our plan is to change the world one Friday at a time.” Greg gave us the downlow at the recent Pecha Kucha bike night, including this perfect image that captures the moment when the Sisyphus effect gives way to the snowball effect. And since today is the day before Friday, and …

The Waiheke Winter Warm-up – an island adventure, close to home

The Waiheke Winter Warm-up - an island adventure, close to homeOn a sunny Saturday, the Ladygang & Frocks on Bikes took a bunch of new gals for a gallivant around Waiheke. Jessica Rose reports: Jess and Sophie’s ‘Waiheke Winter Warm-up’ ride was a fantastic success this weekend, despite threats to the contrary from Auckland weather all week. The day dawned sunny, but with light showers… which did prompt some calls to postpone the ride for fairer weather. But the ladies, some thirty (!) brave and beautiful women, took a gamble (and a raincoat) and agreed to meet at the Downtown ferry terminal at midday. This turned out to be a brilliant decision. Assembled at the wharf we found a diverse crowd, some who hadn’t ridden with a …
