Yes we… CAN DO! A gathering for advocates

Bike Auckland

2 min read

The Cycling Action Network is running its regular national get-together for bike advocates in Wellington this year. It’s a wonderful chance to compare notes with people from all over the country about how to move things forward, especially in an election year. And this year’s theme taps into the grand historical sweep of bikes past and future: it’s the BikeBiCentennial, celebrating 200 years of fun, freedom and adventure!

When:  Saturday 25 – Sunday 26 March 2017

Register online here.

  • Members: Early bird $80 (after 6 March it’s $100), or $60 for a day (not including Saturday evening dinner)
  • Non-Members: $140 whole weekend, $80 day (consider joining CAN to save)

If cost is a barrier, CAN has some limited funds to help local groups send advocates.

Where:  Mezzanine Meeting Room, Wellington Central Library, Victoria Street. As well as being central, the venue has generous bike parking, and Wellington yarnbombers are already decorating the stands.

What’s on:

BiketribesCANCAN DO is about linking up with advocates from around the country. We’re working on a programme that will facilitate your network building. A draft programme will be available shortly, but is likely to include:

  • An informal dinner on Friday night, with a showing of Century of Cycling, Nga Taonga Sound and Vision’s compilation of historic cycling films.
  • Updates on progress from Wellington and around the country, with presentations from advocates, councils, and NZTA.
  • Election year: how do we get a bike-friendly government?
  • Skills sessions for bike advocates
  • Cycle tourism: how has Nga Haerenga helped tourism and business?
  • E-Bikes: update on rules, and a chance to ride one
  • Getting more kids on bikes
  • CAN’s Share the Road project
  • A conversation with Fulton Hogan on roadworks and signalling
  • New initiatives: Bikes Welcome and ReBicycle
  • Tours of Wellington bike routes, including the World Famous Frocks On Bike Laneway Art tour
