Where are all the South Auckland cyclists? You are needed to help a series of new cycleway projects Auckland Transport is planning in former Manukau City. The projects are:
- Cycle facilities on Puhinui Road – a key cycling link for the Papatoetoe area, and linking to the airport (NZTA is planning cycling facilities on SH20B to join these urban cycleways)
- Cycle facilities on Great South Road in Takanini – between Kevale Place to Taka Street (and also including improvements through Takanini Interchange)
- Cycle facilities on Great South Road from Papakura to Drury – a pretty long section. Works here for cyclists have been mooted a long time, will we get them now?
And here’s the key – many of these works, particularly those on Puhinui, will risk heavy resistance from local residents and businesses who hate the idea that parking may have to be removed. In the past, numerous cycle projects were cut back or cancelled outright because the public feedback was too negative – a chorus of “nobody cycles here, so why take our car parks?”
That’s where you come in. Tell them that sometimes the egg HAS to come before the chicken – and that you want better cycleways here.
If you live in these areas, or if you cycle there, please read about the projects, and submit your comments to Auckland Transport here.
