How the North was (not) cycled?

Another opportunity for North Shore-ites to comment on a (somewhat) cycle-related project. Okura River Road and Vaughans Road in the Long Bay area are to receive work – including shared paths, which we think are a great way to connect rural and semi-rural communities in a way that actually gets people on their bikes.

So what is the big “but“? The shared path is designed to be built (maybe) as “Stage 5” – possibly many years after all the car-focused work intended for the earlier “Stages 1-4”!

Not good enough, really. Please tell Auckland Transport that walking & cycling infrastructure can’t be deferred to “some time later” like as if we were back in the 1990s… they are planning to settle a lot of new Aucklanders in this area. Let’s not stick them with using their cars as the only real option from Day 1. These future residents can’t raise their voice yet, so it falls to us.
