Have your say on making Auckland a cycling city

Auckland’s 21 local boards have each prepared a draft local board plan that sets out local aspirations and priorities that will guide decisions local boards make over the next three years and beyond.  Local board plans will feed into other key Auckland Council plans, such as the Auckland Plan and 2012-22 Long-term Plan.

Cycle Action is submitting on each of the plans to ensure that getting our communities cycling is made a priority across the Auckland Region.

It is easy to make a quick submission on your own  draft Local Board plan.   Submissions are due by 4pm on Monday 8 August

Key Messages

Cycle Action Auckland wants an Auckland which invites people to use the bicycle in their everyday life, riding in comfort and safety. The benefits of more bicycle use – whether it be for riding to work or school, visiting friends, doing errands or just for recreation – are numerous, and range from reduced emissions and health costs to a more friendly urban environment, where people take pride in their communities.

Cycling in Auckland is already safer than many other physical activities – and with rising numbers, cycling is becoming even safer, as both drivers and riders become more used to interacting with each other – raising the cycling mode share by just 1% from the current 1-2% approximately halves the crash risks for the individual rider.2

Cycle Action Auckland however acknowledges that most Aucklanders are currently reluctant to cycle on our car-dominated roads. Therefore, we seek greater investment into off-road cycleways, and other smart ways of separating cars and cyclists.
