Hauraki Cycle Trail is close to home!

Within just a few months one of the most promising New Zealand Cycle Trails in the North Island will be opening close to home for Aucklanders – the Hauraki Rail Trail from Thames to Paeroa, with a spur path to Waihi through beautiful Karangahake Gorge. And damn, it is looking good. Just look at this TVNZ video.

I am particularly pleased to be able to link to this video, because “bridge-bustin’ Dan” (now back to bridge-building in his old age!) is actually a relative of mine, via my girlfriends’s Coromandel family. Some of the smaller bridges in the video were still sitting in the front yard of his property during the last family gatherings. Great job Dan, I am looking forward to taking the nieces on the trail!

The trail (map on NZCT website) will have it’s official opening on the 5th of May.
