Franklin Road reopens – a boulevard with better bikeways!

Franklin Road reopens – a boulevard with better bikeways!Cycleway openings are a rare occasion this year, as delayed projects work their way through the pipeline. So it was a treat to roll along to the opening of the renewed Franklin Road last Wednesday. Of course, this wasn’t formally a cycleway project, even though the results include high-quality bike lanes. This was a massive, full-noise street renewal, undertaken from the ground up. From the underground up, in fact! This grand old street has had a nose-to-toes makeover, starting with buried utilities – no small thing, as this included separating the old combined public sewage and stormwater pipe, which had led to sewage overflowinginto the harbour when rain flooded into the pipes. …

Attention Frank, Lin & Rod – Your Opinions Needed…

Attention Frank, Lin & Rod - Your Opinions Needed...…it’s Bruce here, to say: Horrible puns aside, whatever your name, could you all please come forward and support the good improvements in the newest Franklin Road cycleway design? This is your final opportunity to weigh in. AT now has its foot flat to the floor: feedback for this last consultation closes at 4.00pm, Tuesday 10 May 2016. As covered in our previous posts (1, 2, 3, 4), it’s been a rollicking ride. You will recall that AT made the decision to retain the flush median / not go for a parking-protected cycle lane, which eliminated our preferred option. We worried this might be the start of another slide down the slippery slope of compromised design, …

Frankly, this is pretty great – new designs for Franklin Road

Frankly, this is pretty great – new designs for Franklin RoadThe new designs for Franklin Rd are in, and we are impressed. We knew that parking-protected bike lanes had been ruled out – but this round of design proposes the next best thing: separated lanes raised above the road, separated from traffic by a rounded kerb, and with buffer zones on both sides. You may remember that after the disappointment of not getting parking-protection (in part because of a safety audit that questioned the safety in these specific circumstances, i.e. trees and lots of driveways and fast downhill cyclists – plus, one presumes, Auckland drivers), we raised this as an option to upgrade the ho-hum result. And, once they had a chance to get their heads around …

The Gift of the Magi: a decision on Franklin Road

The Gift of the Magi: a decision on Franklin RoadLast night we got the news about what’s in the Christmas stocking for people on bikes along Franklin Road, come next year’s full-scale upgrade of the whole road. As you know, after an initial decision by Auckland Transport that left pretty much no cycling facilities in the redesign plans, we took a stand, and managed to get three options that all provided space for people on bikes back on the table. Given the very tight timeline (with power and water work already scheduled for early next year), feedback was swift and strong, in the form of 139 submissions via our online form (you guys!) and 171 submissions from other quarters. Last night at …

Franklin Rd epic effort! You’ve knocked our socks off!

Franklin Rd epic effort! You've knocked our socks off!‘Fabulous’, ‘stunning’, ‘brilliant’! That’s what I say when someone far exceeds my expectations. So, what to say when139 people wrote superb, articulate responses to our call last weekend for feedback on Franklin Rd? Jolisa and I thought one or two of you would reply during the 3 days we had to get your feedback … I even had a sneaky dream that Jolisa’s creative and clever blog post with the darling ‘Socks’ kitten would get a dozen of you going. But we never expected such a deluge of carefully considered, well expressed comments, and lots of thoughtful new ideas on how the right solution for Franklin Rd could be a template for …

Gold: Franklin sense, and more! 3 fresh designs for Franklin Rd

Gold: Franklin sense, and more! 3 fresh designs for Franklin RdUpdated: huge thanks for your responsiveness – we’re collating 138 individual responses, and will post an overview of your thoughts very soon. Very grateful for your time and effort! Auckland Transport will hear your voices loud and clear. The story of Franklin Rd’s makeover has taken another turn, with three fresh designs from AT for consultation, and urgent feedback requested so that work can begin on schedule. This is a massive step forward from August, when it appeared that two of the original four designs – the only ones with dedicated provision for bikes! – were being scratched, apparently in response to a safety audit that looked into the issue of resident vehicles reversing out of driveways and people heading downhill on bikes. …

Franklin, my dears: we do give a damn

Franklin, my dears: we do give a damnWe all share a love of bikes and the joy and freedom of riding around Auckland.  Cycle Action is about celebrating and evangalising this lifestyle, of course. But we’re also about the gritty grind of advocating for better street design, so that the 60% of Aucklanders who say they would ride if there was safe infrastructure can enjoy the city on bikes as well. And that sometimes has to happen one neighbourhood and one street at a time. Here’s an update on a small but very significant project for Auckland’s bikeable future: Auckland Transport’s proposed $10m upgrade of Franklin Road in Ponsonby. Best known as the city’s premier street for Christmas …
