If you’d love to see Victoria Street cycleway complete, please take 5 minutes today to raise your voice for it.
A safe cycle connection from the Nelson St cycleway to CRL
The Victoria Street cycleway in question spans just two blocks from Federal Street to Nelson Street. This link was initiated due to advocacy from us, Bike Auckland! It is a crucial safe cycle connection from Nelson Street cycleway to the emerging Te Waihoritiu Station, and Te Hā Noa, giving people the option to continue on to midtown beyond.
It is an interim solution and, when funds are available, it would later be upgraded to realise the vision of a Linear Park along Victoria Street as detailed in the City Centre Master Plan.
You can find out more about this small yet mighty link and why we need to protect it in this awesome Greater Auckland blog here.
But it’s almost complete
The short version is, the Mayor saw some road cones and has decided he wants the whole thing ripped out. Although it is pretty much done (and would be rideable in early March), there is a possibility that the Mayor’s pressure may mean it is removed.
What can we do about it?
We know so many of you have been begging for this link. Auckland Transport need to hear that there is strong public support for it.
Let’s make this quick – just 5 minutes to send a short and sweet email of support to our Mayor with the other Councillors and key Auckland Transport people copied in.
Here are some points you could make:
- I want to ride this connection! I would not cycle through that area in the traffic and I need the cycleway to get me to the Sky Tower / Te Waihorotiu / beyond to Albert or Victoria Park.
- Providing transport options is crucial for modeshift. We need safe cycleways and public transport options to be available to reduce motor traffic congestion.
- This is a step towards achieving the vision in the City Centre Master Plan. If we don’t do something when it’s already outlined in key plans and strategies, when will we do it?
- A cycleway right outside our tourist icon, the Sky Tower, is the perfect vision of a clean, sustainable Aotearoa.
