Official Opening – Hauraki Rail Trail, Waihi to Waikino

Bike Auckland

It was great to receive a call from Warwick Marshall to let us know the Hauraki Rail Trail stretch from Waihi to Waikino was officially opened today. I’m looking forward to getting over there to check it out during the summer. Warwick is aiming to form a group of cycle advocates in the area – If you would like to contact him, let us know here at CAA and we can put you in touch.

The day has finally arrived, some-what overcast with squally showers. Mayor John Tregidga did the honors by declaring the track open. Local Komatua blessed the track. It was great to catch up with Green MP Kevin Hague for the first time…gee he gets around. The photo on the car-ridge from left to right… Mayor John Tregidga, Scott Simpson, Kevin Hague, Hugh Vercoe.WCP1

A huge turnout, mums & dads, children, young & old, riders who had come from a-far to ride this great historic trail. It will be a 10/10 for the local businesses in the area; tourism, cafes, eateries etc. The town planners, the men and woman who laid down the track, those who built the bridges and cut down plenty of scrub, they can all pat themselves on the back. They have done a great job.

The trail will be a big hit this summer, walking, jogging, cycling when the weather warms up. Pack a picnic & togs, bring your trout line and make sure to bring along warm clothing for changeable weather around this region.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks forward, I’ll be going to work in the dark. See you all on the track or in the Big City, Auckland.
