Upper Harbour Local Board candidate Anna Atkinson: Bike Pledge

If elected to represent Upper Harbour Local Board, I, Anna Atkinson, pledge:

I believe people of all ages should feel able to bike safely to get around. Auckland needs more climate-friendly transport to ensure a sustainable and resilient Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, protecting our environment and communities for future generations. If elected, I commit to making a safe, connected cycle network a priority.

Comments

I have supported cycling and cycling projects on the Local Board for six years. Finally after years of advocacy AT are going to put in a shared path on Oteha Valley Road which connects up two other shared paths. I have also supported the Hobsonville Road Cycleway which is to be built shortly. I’m known on the board as the transport advocate. We need transport choice and safety. Many suburbs in Upper Harbour don’t have a PT option, others have no safe riding options and there are also missing footpaths. I work hard to get these shortfalls addressed.

With regards to the question above on share of funding going up, I only put partially agree, as it depends where the money is coming from. Public Transport also needs more funding and I wouldn’t want to see any shuffling from there, as PT fares should come down.

Detailed commitments

    • Partially agree – I support increasing cycling and walking’s share of the transport budget to the UN-recommended 20%.
    • Agree – I support building cycleways to connect Auckland and fill existing gaps, including crossing the Harbour.
    • Agree – I believe cycleways can be delivered affordably and quickly.
    • Agree – I support connecting neighbourhoods to major cycleways, destinations like schools and workplaces, and transport hubs through supportive Local Board funding.
    • Agree – I support calming traffic around schools and residential areas to create people-friendly spaces.
    • Agree – I will work to ensure new Safety Plans are in place quickly so children and adults can walk and bike safely.
    • Agree – I support following the Transport Emissions Reduction Pathway (TERP) to significantly cut transport emissions by promoting walking and cycling.
