According to the New Zealand road rules, the numbers and letters on your vehicle’s plate must be clearly visible at all times. This means, if you have a rear bike rack on your car which obscures your number plate, you’ll need to order a supplementary number plate to attach to the front of the bike rack.
You can buy official supplementary number plates direct from the LICENSYS website.
- You need to be the registered person of the vehicle and have a New Zealand driver licence or other suitable ID.
- Payment can be made via credit card or cheque.
- Supplementary plates cost $33.72. You can also order a handy plastic holder to attach it to your bike rack for an additional $23.00. These prices are slowly inflated over time.
- Allow 7–10 days for postal delivery. (You can also upgrade to courier delivery, for a fee).
