Big goals require brilliant minds. That’s why we’re excited to share more about the newest members of our Board, Karen Weir and Maurice Wells! From high-level business strategy to the frontline of the ebike revolution, they’re bringing fresh energy and invaluable expertise to our mission. Dive in to read their stories and see how they’re helping shape the future of cycling in Tāmaki Makaurau.

A lifelong love for riding

Karen Weir’s cycling story starts just like many of ours: with a beloved first bike and a sense of freedom.

“I have enjoyed riding since I got my first proper bike as a kid – a single speed, pedal braked bike my Dad had cleaned up and repainted! Since then I’ve done cycle touring, enjoyed cycle trails, weekend rides and cycling fun-rides with family and friends.”

In her career, Karen works with major organisations, using deep customer insights to drive business success and hone organisational focus. Now, she’s bringing that high-level expertise to Auckland’s cycling and micromobility tribes. Karen elevates our functional, day-to-day conversations with sharp strategic nous.

For Karen, joining the board is all about channelling her energy into tangible change for our community. She’s keen to help shape a better city for everyone. We are lucky to have Karen’s energy on the team as we advocate for a more bikeable, human-centric Auckland.

The man behind the big pink bike shop

Maurice Wells founded Electric Bike Team (that unmistakable, big pink bike shop right by the K Road entrance to the Lightpath) after being inspired by the Lightpath’s joyous opening event ten years ago. He took a massive punt on the area becoming a major cycling hub. Since then, he’s witnessed, and actively helped drive, the massive evolution of our cycle network. One of his proudest moments is helping see the K Road cycleway project through while on the K Road Business Association board. Maurice believes the growth of safe, connected infrastructure has brought a wave of new riders right to his doorstep. This in turn means he has expanded the shop and now serves even more Aucklanders.

He brings invaluable bike industry insights to the Bike Auckland board, alongside solid governance experience from his time on the K Road Business Association board.

Maurice is fiercely passionate about the power of ebikes and micromobility. For him, they are the ultimate catalyst for a better transport system – and a more vibrant city to live in. Always looking ahead, he’s at the forefront of the conversation around what future transport can look like. He urges people to break out of old mindsets about what “biking” means. As he loves to say: “Everyone needs an ebike. Some just don’t know it yet.”
