Have you ever found yourself wanting to tell drivers how quick commuting by bike is? If so, you’re going to love this innovation: road signs showing live travel times by mode.
By October 2026, Auckland Transport will be trialling smart signs in five locations (Constellation Drive, Te Atatu Road, Pakuranga Road, Ti Rakau Drive and Apirana Avenue).
These locations have been deliberately chosen:
- They have high traffic volumes, where small shifts in behaviour can have a meaningful impact.
- They have viable alternative travel options, such as public transport routes, cycling options or different corridor choice.
We think a careful approach is good here – let’s entice someone to switch to a bike commute where there is a safe route for biking.
By sharing the journey time to a destination by public transport, car and bike, the signs create awareness about travel options available.
We love these signs: useful info delivered at the right time in the right place.

Auckland Transport will also trial signs showing the journey time (by car) at different departure times.
