A report from Jessica Rose – Eyes at the FUn biKe RaCe.
Over Queen’s Birthday weekend, myself and a contingent of West and Central Aucklanders took a ride out to Mangere to hang with the legendary Teau Aiturau and the Cool Kids in Triple Teez Gang. The weather threatened rain, but that didn’t stop this keen group of riders out to race, have fun and learn about safe biking.
Although we had to abandon the BMX track in Blake Road Reserve in favour of the nearby tarmac car park, this turned out to be a win for attracting passers-by from Mangere’s Centre Park. One family, out to enjoy the miniature train rolling round the park, just happened to have their bikes in their cars, so were able to join in – talk about being prepared.
As the race approached, there were a few ‘sprints’ to warm up. Teau was busy teaching everyone the Three L’s: Look, Listen, Learn! We took some time to practice some key skills on the obstacle course, like balancing while riding the plank and learning to think fast with braking safely in a group exercise. There were some “follow the leader” drills, and even a slow bicycle race – last one wins.
After a delicious break for some free range sausages, chips and water to keep everyone hydrated it was time for the race. Riders grouped in teams of four for the heats, and people raced around the marked track. Then the best of each four got to race each other, until it was time for the prizegiving to conclude the day.
Thanks for the FUn biKe RaCe Triple Teez, it was a really good time!
PS Anyone interested in joining Triple Teez on one of their fun days out – check out their next event: ‘Bike the Nite Matariki’. This Friday June 19th, meet at the Mangere Town Centre car park at 6pm for a loop ride through Onehunga and back. Bust out all your lights and dress yourself and your bike up as bright as you can!
