Bike Auckland provides expert feedback and advice to Council, Auckland Transport, and transport engineering firms when they are investigating, designing and renewing parts of the transport network. Our Infrastructure Team is a key player in Bike Auckland’s advisory and advocacy work.

What does the Infrastructure Team do?
Our Infrastructure Team is made up of passionate volunteers who work with urban designers and transport planners and engineers to make sure roading infrastructure works for people on bikes.
The Infrastructure Team advocates for cycling to be included into designs whenever possible, and provides advice on how to make improvements and plug gaps for a safer, more accessible and connected cycling network for our region.
The region-wide cycle network we are working for
One of Bike Auckland’s goals is to see a regionwide network of comfortable, protected bike ways, smooth off-road cycleways, and greenways through parks. Auckland Transport’s planned cycleway network is part of Future Connect.
Future Connect is the long-term network plan for Auckland’s transport system. It was last updated in 2023, and covers the plans for Auckland’s transport system, including cycling and micromobility, up to 2034. One of Future Connect’s focus areas is “Make walking, cycling and public transport preferred choices for many more Aucklanders”. By bringing together all modes into one plan, it provides the future vision for how we get around our region. Future Connect has an interactive map which you can explore to see what is planned for your area.

Could you be part of the Bike Auckland Infrastructure Team?
Bike Auckland Infrastructure Team members get a sense of satisfaction by making infrastructure better. For those who work in the transport industry, they grow their connections within the industry, through working alongside Auckland Transport, engineering firms and Waka Kotahi NZTA. Others enjoy learning about the processes that lead to infrastructure being built.
Our Infrastructure Team volunteers are often, but not always, people with knowledge or expertise in:
- Walking and cycling facility design
- Road design
- Transport engineering/planning
- Urban design
But don’t let this put you off! One of our key Infrastructure volunteers, Carol, is a graphic designer, who has picked it up as she went along. And sometimes all we really need is someone who can share insights from their experiences riding bikes around their local areas.
The main thing we look for is people passionate about strengthening the Auckland cycling network, who have an eye for detail, and who have capacity (ideally at least 1 hour per month). The Infrastructure Team meets quarterly (for those who can make it). Meetups allow for an exchange of ideas, knowledge, and skills, and also allows the team to discuss the list of upcoming projects.
The Bike Auckland Infrastructure Team has achieved a lot!

Some key projects our Infrastructure Team made happen or contributed to:
- Te Ara I Whiti – the Pink Pathway – and adjoining Nelson St
- Tāmaki Drive two-way cycleway
- Project Wave (connecting Nelson St to Quay St)
- The Northwestern two-way cycleway through Kingsland and separated walkway
- Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai – Glen Innes to Tāmaki shared pathway – and John Rhymer connection (led by local advocacy which we reinforced)
- The ‘Victoria street gap’; 2 blocks of two-way cycleway from Nelson St to Federal St
