Cycling numbers update – October 2013

Some good news from AT on cycling numbers in Auckland:

AT counts cyclists at 9 key sites around the region. There has been an increase of 26.0% in cyclist movements in October 2013 when compared to October 2012.The morning peak movement’s increased by 22.1% when compared to October last year. A total of 870,928 cycle trips were recorded for the year November 2012 to October 2013, this is an increase of 7.93% on the previous year. October rainfall was 50% lower than usual.

I dont know why AT feels it necessary to mention the rainfall for the month. It seems to be suggesting that the cycling uptake can only be attributed to better weather, despite the cycling for the entire year being up by a significant amount. Does AT blame a decrease in driving on less rainfall?

Overall good news but it is a pity that we can’t really point to any significant improvements in cycling infrastructure in the city to attribute this to. The Grafton gully cycleway maybe?

Great to know that more people are out on bikes and I have certainly noticed it in the CBD and Devonport.
