After years of Bike Auckland advocacy, bikes are finally allowed on buses in NZs biggest city. The year-long trial allows for bikes to be taken on board every third NX1 bus crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Allowing bikes on board the bus itself is fantastic for anyone who would have difficulty lifting their bike, such as if they have an e-bike, and the service provides a crucial safety net for anyone who misses their last ferry or gets a flat tyre.
We’re already hearing heart warming stories – such as kids taking their bikes on the bus to the skate park, a win for their independence during the school holidays. Bike Auckland would love this trial to be extended to more buses, especially the buses which replace trains, so that they are a true train replacement service for all users.
