Auckland Transport have three projects on the go in Takānini which will be of interest to those who bike in the area – or those who would like to give it a go.
- Great South Road between Manuroa Road and Glenora Road
- Takaanini Level Crossing removal
- Maru Road (which connects Great South Road and the station)
Auckland Transport would like your input on the first item – Great South Road changes.
The level crossing engagement starts later in May. You can sign up for updates on the link.
Changes on Great South Road in Takānini
Great South Road changes are in two stages of work, tied to the level crossing removal. Stage 1 is expected to take around two weeks to complete, and Stage 2 around eight to 12 weeks. There are therefore interim and future designs.

On the final design, we question whether this area would be better served by a T3 lane plus a main traffic lane each way, rather than two traffic lanes each way.
In the interim design, if they could widen the footpath temporarily to make it a wider shared path while the changes are going on that would make it safer for people on bikes. However, we acknowledge there is very little cycle traffic along this stretch of road currently. This is due to poor street design for bikes, and lots of traffic – so hopefully there is a better future in sight.
There is lots of detail on this page describing the changes – we recommend having a read.
Maru Road
A new shared path is planned along Maru Road that will connect to the Great South Road project’s shared paths, off-road cycle lanes, and the push button-activated signalised crossing we’re adding near this street. More information about this project will be available soon.
