Interim success for Whangaparaoa Road

Thumbs Up Sign ATGood news from Auckland Transport – after our extremely disappointed reaction to the deficient layout proposed for the four-laning of Whangaparaoa Road, they have now agreed that the design indeed doesn’t meet the standards that Auckland Transport expects for cycle infrastructure:

“The general consensus is that provision for cycling as indicated on the layout drawings and cross-section sent to you does not comply with current standards and that attention needs to be given to improving cycling facilities along the route. AT will investigate options for improvement during the upcoming preliminary and detailed design stages of the project.”

It is good to hear that all our activity here – many emails, several meeting with the project team, and our formal submission – hasn’t fallen on deaf ears. This is a significant step, and we applaud Auckland Transport for having the integrity to revisit a design that was using such outdated priorities. Now we will have to see what is being proposed to address the issues!
