Why Voting Matters for People Who Bike
Every election is a chance to shape the future of our streets. From public transport to cycling infrastructure, decisions made at the policy level directly impact our ability to move safely and freely through Tāmaki Makaurau.
With the deadline to enrol closing at the end of August, now’s the time to make sure your voice is ready to be counted. Why? Because the people elected to local boards, councils, and government shape how we travel and how seriously climate and community wellbeing are taken.
What’s Happening Right Now?
Less than 1% of our region’s transport budget has been allocated towards walking and cycling. Auckland Council is in charge of this funding decision. Auckland Transport is also paying close attention to Local Board views on transport, with some areas – like Manurewa and Waiuku – missing out on funded cycling improvements because their Local Boards did not support them.
This kind of influence shows just how important it is to have elected representatives who back safe, accessible, low-carbon transport options for everyone.
Why Your Vote Counts
When decisions like these are made behind closed doors or without community input, it’s a reminder of how much power is concentrated at the top – and why we need representatives who understand the real cost of poorly connected streets and car-dependent planning.
Voting is one of the most powerful tools we have to demand accountability and push for policies that support better transport choices. We’ve just published a piece breaking down exactly how local boards and councillors shape transport decisions in Tāmaki Makaurau – and why your vote matters more than ever.

What Can You Do Right Now?
So, what can you do right now? Start by making sure you’re enrolled to vote – then spread the word with your cycling group, neighbours, and whānau. Ask candidates where they stand on active transport, infrastructure investment, and climate action. And most importantly, keep showing up – whether that’s through a Bike Burb, a submission, or the ballot box.
Make sure you’re enrolled to vote before the end of August.
