Welcome to our new website!

BarbC

Hi – great to have you on board today! We hope you like the new format and page design created for us by Sandfield. We’re very happy – thanks a million to our generous sponsor, Bruce Copeland and his smart website building team!

We know it has a lot of clever capability that will be mastered and revealed over time. There’s sure to be a few glitches – please ride alongside us. Give us lots of feedback and encouragement.

This is a big jump up from our first website blog, which began in August 2009 as sporadic posts and grew to daily blogs by March 2012. Our blog editors – first Max Robitzsch and now Ben Lenihan deserve accolades for their dedication. It’s worth noting that the growth of our blog readership has tracked along in parallel with our success in working with the Transport Agency and AT to get sods turned for more high spec. cycleways in Auckland. Think back to 2010 when we launched our ‘radial routes’ – high quality cycleways linking east, west, north and south sectors of Auckland with the Central City.

Our radial route map was prepared for a presentation to Council in February 2011. It was effectively ignored by the Mayor and Councillors, but our lucky break was to have the NZTA’s Stephen Town at the meeting, who took the plan back to office to get his team working with us for delivery! AT has since come to the party; the Grafton and Beach Rd Stage 1 cycleways are finished (and looking classy); the first stage of Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive is funded and in design for sod turning in early April,(with massive help from the Orakei Local Board): we’ve pushed the Nelson St off-ramp and Nelson St Cycleway into funded and design mode, and SkyPath is a major step along the way with over 11,000 public submissions in support to its resource consent application.

We’ve achieved this because of the stronger, more visible and articulate cycling community in Auckland. You’re there, ‘liking’ us (1,180 FB likes), cheering us on, riding around Auckland, making cycling a high profile and #1 topic for media attention. This was brought home to me when I saw the Herald’s Weekend front cover and story ‘Seven Secret Cycleways’ These luscious photos are a real temptation to get out there.  http://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/news/article.cfm?c_id=7&objectid=11397641 .

Despite this, we all know it’s mostly mean streets riding on 80% of Auckland roads –Wiri in South Auckland or Wairau Park on the North Shore, not to mention Manukau or Lincoln Rds.

With this in mind, I welcome you again to our new website. Stay with us as we keep lobbying and campaigning for Council $$ to build a new generation of safe cycleways to connect up the successes we’ve notched up in the last 3 years.
