Waiheke weekend fun on wheels: a picnic & a movie

Bike Auckland

Feel like an island frolic this weekend – perhaps a bike ride, lunch, another bike ride, dinner, a movie, and then home on the ferry? Luckily, the good folk of Cycle Action Waiheke have the perfect pair of bike events lined up for Sunday 28 February.

The first is The Electric Picnic, an e-bike ride and lunch. The ride starts at 11am in Oneroa: your destination is Awaawaroa Bay Eco Village, where you will enjoy a sumptuous organic spread.

  • If you already have an e-bike, just book a place by contacting storycentre@gmail.com or 0273743324.
  • If you don’t have an e-bike but have always wanted to try one, book your lunch place as above and then contact E-Cycles Waiheke on 0220502233 or bookings@ecycles.com to reserve a bike.

Stop for dinner in Oneroa and then you’re ready for round 2…

Cycle to the Cinema at the Waiheke Island Community Cinema, for the grand finale of Bike Waiheke’s National Cycle Month programme of events. Relax on a sofa in Auckland’s cutest movie theatre and enjoy a non-stop bike thriller that’s guaranteed to have you perched on the edge of your seat.

Premium Rush is that rare bird: a chase picture that’s just a chase picture – and a dandy one,” said the critic for New York magazine. The New York Daily News raved: “Cruising the streets of Manhattan, clocking in at a tight 90 minutes and set on a bike without brakes, this loose-limbed action-drama is a swift, sweaty ode to the city’s subcultures and a punky descendant of ’70s B-movies.”

Sounds like a blast!

Drinks and nibbles from 7pm, movie starts at 7.30pm. Anyone on any kind of bicycle is warmly welcome, and entrance is by koha.

If you’re heading home on the ferry: you can scurry to catch the 9.45, or take the last sailing at 11.15.
