Louisa Wall – LABOUR

Louisa Wall, MP, is running for Labour in Manurewa.

More kids on bikesCurrently only 2% of Kiwi kids ride a bike to school. Is lifting this number a priority? If so, how will we get there?

Yes! We’ve been able to invest in bicycles via our Wiri Licensing Trust with applications from Counties Manukau Sport so our children can participate in the annual WeetbixTRY event. Auckland Transport and other charities have also contributed to growing the numbers of bikes, so we have over 500 bicycles at our primary schools.

We need a bike track and a pump track so our kids have a safe place to learn how to ride. This was fed into the recent Manurewa local board community engagement as a priority.

Bike-friendly citiesWhat would you do to make it easier for Aucklanders (in your electorate, and beyond) to choose bike travel?

I will continue to work with Counties Manukau Sport and our schools to continue to participate in the WeetbixTRY and to advocate for safe spaces for our children to learn to ride as a prerequisite to riding to school and as a mode of transportation.

Safer streetsHow would you make streets (in your electorate and beyond) safer for everyone who uses them, including those on bikes?

We have a bike network across Manurewa. Our challenge is that we do not have a bike culture. That’s why I’ve engaged with Auckland Transport and our Manurewa Local Board with supporters Wiri Licensing Trust and Counties Manukau Sport to build a context for investment and development.

Fave place to rideWhere’s your favourite place to ride a bike in Auckland?

Totara Park is on my doorstep and is a favorite destination of many for walking, running and cycling. I have however biked mostly in Mangere Bridge as part of women’s events and I love Ambury Regional Park.

Elliot Ikilei – Conservatives

Elliot Ikilei is standing for the Conservative Party in Manurewa.

More kids on bikes
Currently only 2% of Kiwi kids ride a bike to school. Is lifting this number a priority? If so, how will we get there?

Anything getting kids out exercising is an priority; in South Auckland we are needing to focus on the safety aspect as the first priority. As an example, I deal with cases of kids assaulting other kids for their bike every couple of weeks or so; community safety is our first concern, and then the implementation of programs can commence with more positive impact.

Bike-friendly citiesWhat would you do to make it easier for Aucklanders (in your electorate, and beyond) to choose bike travel?

Community safety; maintained bike lanes (road and thoroughfares); duathlon events and the construction/maintenance of bike areas around the community (currently we do have some walkways, though there is some contention around right-of-way).

Safer streetsHow would you make streets (in your electorate and beyond) safer for everyone who uses them, including those on bikes?

Big question!! As above, safety, or the minimizing of criminal activity is a big one; also perhaps ‘bike buses’ with a couple of parents/teachers travelling with young people, as well as dedicated cycle ‘roads’. First and foremost, however, is that the community must feel that they can take out a bike anytime on the streets, and they just don’t feel that.

Fave place to rideWhere’s your favourite place to ride a bike in Auckland?

Actually, I enjoy riding from where I live to work; long heavy slope up Mahia with undulating terrain; it’s also early so I can focus on the day ahead, or process the day I have finished on the other side; it also helps to view things from the perspective of our young people, as the car does disconnect us from the direct environment.
