What is the Climate Action Targeted Rate?

The Climate Action Targeted Rate (also known as CATR) is a special rate that Auckland Council are proposing which will unlock additional government funding and enable Tāmaki Makaurau to put in place a whole bundle of measures. This will help to reduce emissions, mitigate the impacts of climate change and generally make our city a better place!

We’re excited about this, because the CATR includes $144 million for building cycleways across Auckland – including loads of really important local connections and part of the fantastic Matakana Coastal Trail. This is a significant increase on the current cycleways budget, which will help us get a much better network of bike paths much sooner!

Sounds good. What’s the catch?

The Climate Action Targeted Rate has a lot to offer, but it’s not a done deal. We think this is a great initiative and encourage everyone to submit feedback on the annual budget – let Auckland Council know that we support spending a little more money now in order to have a resilient, accessible and climate-friendly city in the future!

The weekly cost of the CATR is around $1.12 per week for most Auckland households. While we know this will impact some families more than others, we also believe that if everyone chips in just a little, together we can achieve a lot.

With fuel prices at an all time high, just imagine how much money Aucklanders would save if we had the connected cycle network we’ve always dreamed of!

We recommend you support the Climate Action Targeted Rate, and mention how much you want those safe cycleways! You might also choose to submit on the other issues discussed in the budget proposal – but we leave those for you to decide.
