Speak up for local paths in East Auckland!

Bike Auckland

Ahoy residents of East Tamaki, Pakuranga, Half Moon Bay, Bucklands Beach, Howick, Highland Park, Flatbush, Botany Downs, and Dannemora!

If you walk or bike in the area, and you’re dreaming of a safe school route, or a particular shortcut through a park, or an upgrade that would make an existing route more usable – this is your chance to have your say.

Feedback is open on the Howick Local Paths Draft Network until Saturday 7 April 2018. Take a look at the draft map for the area and the consultation document, and add your thoughts here.

Q. What are Local Paths?

Formerly known as Greenways, Local Paths are all about creating better walking and biking connections within and between neighbourhoods, for recreation and for transport and for a greener community.

Each local board across Auckland is establishing a Local Paths plan to help prioritise the building of crucial links. Here’s the draft Local Paths plan for the Howick local board are.

Q. What are the big opportunities in this part of town?

If you’re a local, you’ll know best about how to improve local connectivity – but there are some really big opportunities here. For starters: with a new Special Housing Area on the way for Flatbush, there’s a big opportunity to build great walking and biking routes into the development.

And with the AMETI project bringing quality cycleways as well as a new busway to a major route, what extra links will create safe access for locals looking to connect to the new cycleway? What about better connections to the ferry? Meanwhile, how about the Bucklands Beach boardwalk project?

Q. What is the consultation hoping to hear?

The Local Board wants to know how you get around on foot and bike – and how you wish you could. They’re keen to hear which routes are most important to people, and why. They also want to hear about any specific issues that need addressing. What’s stopping you using a particular route? Are there some really important connections that aren’t on the map?

They also want to get a sense of what your top priorities are. Each Local Board has a transport fund of about half a million dollars a year. They can also leverage off related projects (e.g. cycleways along motorways, or big busway projects) or help coordinate community sponsorship towards projects (e.g. the Rotary pathway). But the need is always greater than the available funding. So which links or routes should be built first?

Remember, feedback on the Howick Local Paths closes Saturday 7 April – so hop on over and add your thoughts today!
