SkyPath press release hot off the interwebs…
We are pleased to annouce that SkyPath has received funding from the Ministry for the Environment to enable our community consultation and preparation for SkyPath’s Resource Consent which we expect to lodge later this year.
Our resource consent will be fully notified, as we want everyone to have their say on the details of SkyPath’s operation and its interface with Auckland’s walking and cycling networks on either side of the harbour.
With the Government’s announcement that the next harbour crossing will be a tunnel, NZTA have confirmed that SkyPath remains their preferred option for walking & cycling across the harbour.
Auckland Council are investigating SkyPath’s proposed funding arrangements, which will see SkyPath delivered as a self-funded facility given to Council at the end of the tolling period. This will save NZTA and taxpayers approximately $25 million.
Great going – we don’t expect the path to consent being any smoother than the 50+ year fight for walking and cycling on the bridge has been so far. But the SkyPath folks are tenacious enough to see it through – and with a consent application, this is now coming to the part where all issues will be flushed out, and resolved.
