Save Our Safe Speeds
Join All Aboard Aotearoa, Bike Auckland, Walk Auckland, Living Streets Aotearoa, Brake, the road safety charity, school principals and local communities in calling on the Minister of Transport to urgently:
- Work with Auckland Transport to let Aucklanders keep our Safe Speed Zones; and
- Include in the Speed Rule 30 km/h as an option on urban roads for future consultations
What’s happening with the Speed Rule?
Our neighbourhoods are about to become less safe in order to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. The government’s Speed Rule forces road controlling authorities like Auckland Transport to automatically reverse publicly-supported safe speed zones that are saving lives and reducing serious injuries around our schools – without any consultation.
Safe speeds zones are encouraging more kids to walk, cycle and wheel to school while also reducing congestion, saving travel time, and helping everyone to be healthier, better connected, and more productive.
Auckland Transport has taken a broad brush interpretation of the Speed Rule and is moving rapidly to reverse from 14 May over 1,500 safe speeds across Auckland by 1 July. These streets are often in quiet neighbourhoods with no through traffic, where the safe operating speed is 30 kmh. Councils like Hamilton and Dunedin have found acceptable ways to retain the majority of their safe speed zones but Auckland Transport has refused to follow the same approach to the speed rule.
Minister of Transport Chris Bishop has applied common sense in allowing NZTA Waka Kotahi to consider community views regarding safe speeds on state highways before any reversion to higher limits occurs. We are calling on the Minister to apply this same reasonable and fair approach to Tāmaki Makarau Auckland.
