QUICK SUBMIT before 14 December – Grey Lynn needs YOU!

If you do ONE thing this month for a bike-friendly city, make it this: support the Waitemata Safe Routes before Friday 14 December. It takes less than 5 minutes, is absolutely free, and you’ll be giving the gift of safe streets  – to the hundreds of kids who live and bike along these routes, to everyone else in the neighbourhood, and to all of Auckland.

This is a HUGE turning point for Auckland – but victory is not yet guaranteed. Your support is vital.

  • To make sure the project actually happens. There’s still loud opposition out there – so make your voice heard!
  • So it’s the best it can be. Auckland Transport is always under a lot of pressure to trim budgets – support the full design!
  • So we all can see a living, breathing example of healthy streets – let’s give Auckland some real quality neighbourhood bikeways!

Please make a submission, wherever you ride, because success here will lead to more and better bikeways elsewhere! Need more detail? See the AT Project Page, the Glossy Brochure (PDF) or the Bike AKL blog. Ready to submit? GREAT!

Now you can flip between that tab and this one – use our suggested feedback below, or say it in your own words.

2. Give feedback on Route 1 (Surrey, Old Mill, Garnet)

  • Q1 – What do you like?
    • The whole project: it’ll make the streets safer and nicer for everyone
    • Protected bike lanes
    • Raised footpaths across side streets
    • New trees and landscaping
    • Using the painted median strip to create space for all of the above
  • Q2 – What could AT do to improve it?
    • 30 kph zones at shopping villages and schools
    • Support zebra crossings over the raised side streets
    • Make it clear bikes have right of way across side streets too
    • Improve right turn options from the protected bike lanes into the side roads
    • Narrow the wider side roads, e.g. Bullock Track and Prime Rd, and West View Rd / Old Mill Rd, to slow turning cars
    • Traffic-calm the Surrey Crescent / Richmond Road intersection
    • Use sloped kerbs on the inside of the protected bikeway, instead of vertical car kerbs
  • Q3 – Any issues or concerns?
    • Please build this project soon and to the very best standard – because Auckland urgently needs healthy streets.
    • [Add anything else you feel strongly about]

3. Give feedback on Route 2 (Richmond Road)

4. Click NEXT for the final page and the last step…

Here you can fill in your name and contact details.  It’s optional, but it’s a great way to make sure your views are taken seriously and can’t be dismissed as duplicate feedback. It also helps the project team contact you with updates.

5. Click DONE at the bottom of the page, and you’re done!

There you go! You’ve just given a whole lot of people the gift of a bikeway and a whole new set of safe and lovely streets. You’ve given Auckland Transport the go-ahead to design holistic, green, beautiful projects and deliver them to much higher standards than in the past.

You’re the best. Thank you so much – and very happy holidays to you!

Just some of the kids you’ll help – seen in 2016 during the initial consultation. They’ll be 3 years taller by the time the routes are ready to ride. Let’s not waste another minute!
