DESCRIPTION:Location: Room 109 – B15\, Auckland University general library basement\, Princes Street\, Auckland CBD \nWe are going to watch Together We Cycle\, which is a very cool documentary about the revival of the Dutch cycling culture! \nFoyer nibbles in the foyer from 17:45-ish. Maybe earlier if we are onto it 😉 \nThe film Together We Cycle investigates the critical events that has led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. For most people\, cycling in the Netherlands\, seems a natural phenomenon. However\, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day\, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars. \nThen Dutch society took a different turn. Against all odds people kept on cycling. The question why this happened in the Netherlands\, has not an easy answer. There are many factors\, events and circumstances that worked together\, both socially and policy-wise. In Together we cycle\, key players tell the story of the bumpy road which led to the current state. Where cycling is an obvious choice for most citizens. \nWe will also be generally loitering around afterward and hanging out\, with food provided (probably pizza). Gluten free\, vegan options will be available. \nVenue is wheelchair accessible.

We want your ideas and vision of what your ideal low carbon city would look like – as\, after all\, it will be affecting you. \nYou will also hear from the brilliant minds of Kathryn King\, Manager of Walking\, Cycling and Road Safety at Auckland Transport\, and Richard Hills\, Auckland Councillor for North Shore. \nSince Auckland Council laid out its own City Centre Masterplan (back in 2012) for what the next 20 years of development will look like\, the number of pedestrians on Queen St has doubled. And though the city centre’s population was projected to hit 45\,000 by 2032\, it’s already set to exceed that this year – 15 years ahead of predicted. \nWith the original plan up for consultation next year\, we reckon it needs some serious work in catering to the ever changing and growing population of people who use the CBD in their daily lives. \nSo if you already live\, work and party in downtown Tamaki Makaurau\, now’s your chance to bring your transport\, housing and spatial design critiques and solutions to the table. \nDay and Time: Thursday 24 August\, 6 – 7.30pm \nLocation: Room ALR5/421W-301 at the University of Auckland (Architecture Building\, 26 Symonds St) \nThis event is part of Ecoweek at UoA
