DESCRIPTION:Join us at our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 17 November in Parnell. \nBike Auckland members and supporters are warmly invited to our Annual General Meeting (AGM)\, which not only takes care of key business\, but also famously highlights the year’s most exciting developments for people on bikes and gives you a peek of what’s on the horizon. We will have presentations from our Chair\, Karen Hormann as well as key committee members and the wider Bike Auckland whānau. \nBike racks will be set up in a carpark in the carparking area behind the building. Please bring your own lock. \nPlease register to attend the AGM to assist us with our planning and communication. \nWe encourage supporters to take a few minutes on their way to the AGM to take in the Ghost Bike art demonstration at St Patrick’s Cathedral Square for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. 59 ghost bikes represent the number of people who have died while riding bikes on the road in the last 5 years in Aotearoa NZ. This installation also raises awareness of the future deaths and serious injuries which are predicted from the increase of speed limits in Aotearoa New Zealand. \nThe AGM will be followed by a gentle group ride.  The ride is about 9.5km (similar to last year’s ride) and it’s mainly downhill or on the flat\, mostly on protected bike lanes\, shared paths and quiet streets. It is suitable for e-bikes and non e-bikes. Suitable for adults of all abilities. Small children will do best carried on an adult’s bike. \nThe ride concludes at Good George North Wharf in Wynyard Quarter where we look forward to raising a glass with supporters to a year of sustained and effective mahi (work). \nAccessibility \nThe AGM venue at Jubilee Hall is accessible and has a ramp just along the side with a reserved carpark at the start of the ramp.

DESCRIPTION:Join Bike Auckland for our next event to help you build capacity to advocate for your cycling community! \nPippa Coom is a former Auckland Councillor and Local Board Chair who came to politics in 2010 via her cycle activism with Bike Auckland. Since then she has been a champion for safer streets\, transport options and community-led decision making. \nPippa’s presentation draws on her experience leading on projects through council processes and her on-going campaigning work. The Inner West projects that are currently underway after a decade of multiple consultations\, delays and vocal opposition provide a case study for how community advocates can build capacity to meaningfully engage\, influence decision makers and navigate the set-backs on the path to successful community outcomes. \nThis will be a facilitated workshop so that we can get some real ideas and inspiration on paper! A three hour gathering\, there will be time to meet your neighbours and strengthen your own connections\, while we discover ways to make others throughout the community and build capacity for your Bike Burb!

Over the past year\, Dom has contributed in revitalizing the Mt Roskill bike community through the bike trains\, in addition to organising regular community bike events. \nA bike train is a group of students and adults who bicycle to school together\, making stops along a previously designated route to pick up other children en route to school. DESCRIPTION:Learn to ride a tandem bike with people who are blind or have low vision. \nTandem pilots bring the joy of cycling to people who are blind or have low vision\, who may otherwise be excluded from cycling. Tandems benefit people with other disabilities too. For people who can’t cycle alone\, a tandem is a great solution. \nWhat is tandem piloting for people who are blind or have low vision?\nThe vision impaired rider or ‘stoker’ sits at the back of the tandem and provides muscle power. The pilot steers the tandem and rides in close communication with the stoker. \nAbout the session\nCome along to Silo Park where we’ll be using the safe space of the basketball courts for your 30-minute lesson on how to pilot a tandem. After your lesson\, you will have the opportunity for free practice on the tandem with the experienced stokers who are available to help. \nYou’ll also have the chance to meet a high performance tandem pairing who represent Aotearoa internationally at Para cycling competitions. \nBikes will be provided. Bring your helmet if you have one\, or use one of our spares. \nWhat can you do with your new tandem piloting skills?\nOnce trained\, you will be able to use your skills as a pilot rider with people in your own life\, or take up volunteer opportunities such as providing tandem piloting for vision impaired riders on group rides around our region\, recreationally or competitively in the Para sport space. \nHelp spread the word about this event\nUse this Learn to Pilot a Tandem event poster to share this event with your network.

SUMMARY:Protecting Auckland's Transport  Future Together: targeted online letter-writing session with Bike Auckland
DESCRIPTION:Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s transport future is under threat\nCentral Government has funded less than the region’s expected amount toward future-focused transport modes – walking\, cycling and public transport. In fact\, they have removed all funding for new cycleways entirely\, providing just 1% of our region’s transport allocation to finish off existing cycleway projects in Tāmaki Makaurau. \nNo funding not only means that cycleway construction will stop\, even worse\, it also means no planning of future cycling infrastructure can take place. Cycling could simply be left out of the future of our city. \nAuckland Council must now decide which planned projects to continue with and in what areas they will backfill central Government’s shortfall. We desperately need our Councillors to represent people on bikes and fight for a resilient and sustainable city by choosing bikes. \nYour Councillors can’t make these decisions without hearing from residents – and that means you. Will you help them understand the need for safe cycling infrastructure? \nOur campaign to protect Auckland’s transport future is working!\nOver the last two weeks\, dozens of Bike Auckland members have been emailing our local councillors asking them to stand by their commitments to invest in cycling programmes and infrastructure\, now and into the future. Our hard work is working: Auckland Council has asked Auckland Transport to investigate funding option 4c\, one of the options more favourable to cycling. \nOur Councillors need to hear from you before the final decision\nWe know our campaign is working\, but we need all voices in the mix. If you’re in Albany\, Ōrākei or Manukau\, we’d especially love your help. \nWe’ve provided a simple cheat sheet and an example letter to help you email your Councillor. It will mostly be flat and down hill\, the ride will be split 50/50 on the road and protected cycleways. We will have many points to stop and reconvene\, ride slowly together in a group\, and have amazing ride marshalls to guide you during the ride. Please dress for any type of Auckland weather! \nIf bad weather is expected\, we will assess and let you know via email and via the Facebook event (so please register on Humanitix) if the ride component is going ahead. \n \nWhat do the board do\, and what’s the time commitment? \nThe core board role of attending meetings\, reading the material before and after\, and liaising with the board and crew between meetings probably averages 5-6 hours per month. All board member roles and co-opted board positions are voluntary.  \nFind out more about each of them have a read on these blogs: \nChair \nDeputy chair \nTreasurer \nBoard member \nWe would also like each board member to take on some kind of project over their tenure\, which could encompass board policy work\, advocacy initiatives or supporting the crew or volunteers in some capacity. It can all feel all too much and daunting to try to make a difference. \nThere is hope. Erin Thomas\, Director of Change at the International Center for Advocates Against Discrimination and founder of The Launch is running a workshop for Bike Auckland’s Bike Burbs to upskill in advocacy and campaigns. You will have a chance to learn how to identify advocacy objectives and targeting your energy in an effective manner.
