You’ll learn how to understand your community\, find out who they are and why they’d like to connect to your group; learn how to easily communicate your group’s vision and activities to attract new members; and learn the simple ways to tick things along to keep your members engaged. A bigger\, bolder and better-than-ever Biketober will change the conversation around cycling\, bring local decision-makers on board\, and get more people than ever giving cycling for transport a whirl. \nWe know that Biketober has the power to change hearts and minds. But as a small team\, we are constantly stretching our capacity. We need funds to take Biketober to the next level\, creating even more of an impact across our region. \nYour donation will help Bike Auckland organise and promote the festival. DESCRIPTION:What’s all the buzz about bike trains?! \nJoin Bike Auckland in Manukau to learn about bike trains to school from Dominic Ross\, a passionate community activator in Puketāpapa/ Mt Roskill\, who has established successful bike trains for seven local schools in the Mt Roskill/Mt Albert area! Over the past year\, Dom has contributed in revitalizing the Mt Roskill bike community through the bike trains\, in addition to organising regular community bike events. \nA bike train is a group of students and adults who bicycle to school together\, making stops along a previously designated route to pick up other children en route to school. It’s a really fun way to start off the morning\, and a great way to get kids and parents on bikes! \nThis will be a facilitated workshop so that we can get some real ideas and inspiration on paper! \nA three hour gathering\, there will be time to meet your neighbours and strengthen your own connections\, while we discover ways to make others throughout the community and build capacity for your Bike Burb!

(Note: Erin is facilitating two workshops covering the same subject territory\, one on the North Shore\, one in East Auckland.) \nThis event is free\, but please register to attend. \nBuilding winning advocacy campaigns requires us to understand power and how to shift it. In this workshop\, participants are invited to learn about power and influence through an interactive role play scenario focused on bike infrastructure. Participants will leave with a framework they can use to develop their own savvy advocacy strategies. \nA three-hour gathering\, there will be time to meet your neighbours and strengthen your own connections\, while we learn practical applications for influencing decision makers about all things cycling. \nErin Thomas is a Director and Change Facilitator at ICAAD (International Center for Advocates Against Discrimination). A skilled facilitator and researcher\, Erin has worked on challenging human rights issues in the Pacific including gender-based violence and climate justice. Erin is an organiser at heart and thrives on bringing people together to envision more just and equitable futures and confront the status quo. In addition to her work with activists in the Pacific\, her work has included Te Tiriti o Waitangi education with Pākehā and new immigrants and facilitating co-design workshops with communities passionate about active modes of transport.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 17 November in Parnell. \nBike Auckland members and supporters are warmly invited to our Annual General Meeting (AGM)\, which not only takes care of key business\, but also famously highlights the year’s most exciting developments for people on bikes and gives you a peek of what’s on the horizon. We will have presentations from our Chair\, Karen Hormann as well as key committee members and the wider Bike Auckland whānau. \nBike racks will be set up in a carpark in the carparking area behind the building. Please bring your own lock. \nPlease register to attend the AGM to assist us with our planning and communication. \nWe encourage supporters to take a few minutes on their way to the AGM to take in the Ghost Bike art demonstration at St Patrick’s Cathedral Square for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. 59 ghost bikes represent the number of people who have died while riding bikes on the road in the last 5 years in Aotearoa NZ. This installation also raises awareness of the future deaths and serious injuries which are predicted from the increase of speed limits in Aotearoa New Zealand. \nThe AGM will be followed by a gentle group ride.  The ride is about 9.5km (similar to last year’s ride) and it’s mainly downhill or on the flat\, mostly on protected bike lanes\, shared paths and quiet streets. It is suitable for e-bikes and non e-bikes. Suitable for adults of all abilities. Small children will do best carried on an adult’s bike. \nThe ride concludes at Good George North Wharf in Wynyard Quarter where we look forward to raising a glass with supporters to a year of sustained and effective mahi (work). \nAccessibility \nThe AGM venue at Jubilee Hall is accessible and has a ramp just along the side with a reserved carpark at the start of the ramp.

DESCRIPTION:Learn to ride a tandem bike with people who are blind or have low vision. \nTandem pilots bring the joy of cycling to people who are blind or have low vision\, who may otherwise be excluded from cycling. Tandems benefit people with other disabilities too. For people who can’t cycle alone\, a tandem is a great solution. \nWhat is tandem piloting for people who are blind or have low vision?\nThe vision impaired rider or ‘stoker’ sits at the back of the tandem and provides muscle power. The pilot steers the tandem and rides in close communication with the stoker. \nAbout the session\nCome along to Silo Park where we’ll be using the safe space of the basketball courts for your 30-minute lesson on how to pilot a tandem. After your lesson\, you will have the opportunity for free practice on the tandem with the experienced stokers who are available to help. \nYou’ll also have the chance to meet a high performance tandem pairing who represent Aotearoa internationally at Para cycling competitions. \nBikes will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s transport future is under threat\nCentral Government has funded less than the region’s expected amount toward future-focused transport modes – walking\, cycling and public transport. In fact\, they have removed all funding for new cycleways entirely\, providing just 1% of our region’s transport allocation to finish off existing cycleway projects in Tāmaki Makaurau. \nNo funding not only means that cycleway construction will stop\, even worse\, it also means no planning of future cycling infrastructure can take place. Cycling could simply be left out of the future of our city. \nAuckland Council must now decide which planned projects to continue with and in what areas they will backfill central Government’s shortfall. We desperately need our Councillors to represent people on bikes and fight for a resilient and sustainable city by choosing bikes. \nYour Councillors can’t make these decisions without hearing from residents – and that means you. Will you help them understand the need for safe cycling infrastructure? \nOur campaign to protect Auckland’s transport future is working!\nOver the last two weeks\, dozens of Bike Auckland members have been emailing our local councillors asking them to stand by their commitments to invest in cycling programmes and infrastructure\, now and into the future. Our hard work is working: Auckland Council has asked Auckland Transport to investigate funding option 4c\, one of the options more favourable to cycling. \nOur Councillors need to hear from you before the final decision\nWe know our campaign is working\, but we need all voices in the mix. With event budgets tight and accountability unclear\, we discuss how to move beyond ‘nice to have’ solutions and work towards more circular systems. Get insights into industry developments and hear success stories about sustainable practices in events. \nSpeakers include: \nIsabel Emerson – Climate Change & Sustainability Advisor\, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited\nIsabel manages and delivers various climate and sustainability projects aligning to Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate plan. Working at Tāmaki Makaurau’s economic and cultural agency\, she provides climate change and sustainability matter expertise to kaimahi (colleagues)\, including events such as Lantern\, Pasifika\, Diwali and FIFA WWC 2023. Prior to this\, she managed the 2021 Sustainable Business Awards which recognises and celebrates success in sustainability. Isabel also shapes environmental practices from a strategic level\, playing a role in both IEMA-NZ’s Steering Group and the NZEA Sustainable Events Working Group\, formed to drive positive change in the events industry. \nDiane Stanbra – Founder and Head of Getting Things Done\, Rescued Limited\nRescued is leading the multi-billion dollar Upcycled Food market in New Zealand and collaborating with the food and beverage industry to design an Upcycled Food Ecosystem. A member of the Upcycled Food Association (US)\, XLabs NZ – Circular Economy for Business certified\, and participant in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Big Food Redesign Challenge. Diane has a background in finance\, business development\, customer relationship\, sales\, and an established industry network. \nShaz Seton – Clean Event\nClean Event is an industry leader in event waste management. DESCRIPTION:Bike Auckland is hosting our first ever ‘Love your Path’ (cycleway and shared path maintenance\, weeding\, rubbish clean up etc) event as a way for new and existing volunteers to get involved\, to know Bike Auckland\, as well as showing some love for the paths that we all love so much! \nWe hope that from this inaugural event we can roll similar events out across Tamaki Makaurau to allow us to connect with volunteers at in person events and love our paths at the same time…win – win! \nSaturday 9 June\n9.45am for a 10:00am start\nMeet at the Sunhill Carpark for a briefing. We’ll be doing maintenance for 2 hours along the Te Ara Ki Uta Ki Tai (Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive) path. Expect things like: \n\nPicking up rubbish and other waste\nClearing overgrown plants to make sure the path is clear\nRemoving invasive weeds!\nRemoving green waste\n\nBYO tools. We’ll bring the bags for disposing of materials and gloves. \nJoin us for coffee at the end of the clean-up and find out how to support Bike Auckland’s mahi! \nNo registration required.
