Open House @ The Block – cyclists come out to play!

The BlockTransport mayhem is predicted around Takapuna – Devonport this weekend, as the punters come out for Saturday and Sunday’s open house at The Block. Only a lunatic would think of using a car to drive on Lake Rd, as total gridlock is predicted.

AT have put special buses on the route, which we think is brilliant! However, it’s occasions like these that highlight our poor investment in PT, as there are no dedicated bus lanes on this part of Lake Rd, so travel could be slow.

But it’s the perfect day to be a cyclist! The good news is The Block can be reached by bike, using connected cyclelanes on Lake Rd. And there are ferries at the bottom of the garden, virtually – at least they run to Bayswater Peninsula (which is just south of The Block properties, and to Devonport). The corner where The Block properties are located, opposite Takapuna Grammar, can also be reached by the walking and cycling  the famous Green Route and one of the little linking shared paths you’ll see on this map.

If you are into quiet roads and the Devonport ferry, after leaving the ferry building ride towards North Head along King Edward Parade, and at Torpedo Bay turn onto Cheltenham to Tainui to Vauxhall Roads quiet roads, some with footpath cycleways passing gorgeous villas and Cheltenham and Narrowneck Beaches, up a very short hill onto Seacliffe Rd. This is good easy cycling any time. If you’re happy riding on busier roads you can ride from the Devonport ferry straight up through the village, around Mt Victoria, on Victoria Rd to get to the Lake Rd cycle lane – following signs for Takapuna to reach The Block opposite the Grammar School.

AT has kindly turned on valet bike parking when you arrive at The Block. Behave like you are at Downtown Abbey, and hand your bike to the valet. See you there!
