Middlemore: a healthy commute, a health conundrumMiddlemore Hospital has been much in the news lately. The health centre at the heart of the isthmus, it sits at the heart of a health-challenged community, many of whom suffer what Dr David Galler calls “the South Auckland full house, ‘a six-card hand of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, chronic kidney disease and gout’.”  Middlemore is also home to a naturally health-conscious workforce, several of whom make a point of biking to work – while many more would, if it felt safer to do so. Anaesthetist Rob Burrell is one who counts himself lucky to bike to Middlemore, despite the lack of decent infrastructure. Bike to the Future – Grey Lynn gets going!

Bike to the Future - Grey Lynn gets going!On Saturday, over 250 people joined the Bike to the Future ride through Grey Lynn to support the neighbourhood routes under way. Our mates at Generation Zero dreamed up the event, which we were delighted to help organise and marshal. These routes will pave the way for the expanding network through Auckland’s burbs over coming years, so they’re really important. You’ll be glad to hear that a community liaison group process – with representation from Bike Auckland – is already under way. Bike to the Future - for Grey Lynn and beyond!Bike to the Future on Saturday 17th February at 10am is a community ride around Grey Lynn organized by our friends at Generation Zero. The idea is to showcase the huge local potential once the safe bike routes are completed – by giving people a chance to experience the routes as they currently are, winding past the schools and shops, and to imagine them as they might be.
