Our curiosity is peaking: why we’re buzzing for Bike Curious

There are some events you circle on the calendar and think, “that’ll be fun”. And then there are the ones that make you feel like a kid again. The ones where you can already hear the music, smell the kai, and picture yourself grinning like an idiot as something spectacular happens right in front of you.

Bike Curious is firmly in that second category.

Who doesn’t jump at the chance to watch BMX riders launch themselves into the sky and pull off tricks that defy physics? Kids and grownups alike are going to lose their minds at the BMX Big Air stunts. And with riders like Jed Mildon, Hugh Wotherspoon, Riley Neilson, and Brooklyn Williams in the lineup, we’re talking world‑class, jaw‑on-the-floor stuff.

And then there’s the chance to learn to ride a unicycle. You know that tiny voice that says, “Surely I could ride one… right?” Bike Curious is giving us all an opportunity to find out. It’s the kind of challenge that makes you laugh even before you try.

Vospertron robots!

Personally, I’m counting down to the “Pimp Your Bike” workshop. With a personalised glow‑up, my bike will light up the night! Once it’s looking suitably ‘curious’, it’s straight into the glow ride, rolling through Cranwell Park and along the Henderson Creek Path in a magical river of illuminated wheels. Add Vospertron’s glowing robot dance troupe into the mix and suddenly you’re in a fabulous neon fever dream.

And that’s barely scratching the surface. Bike Curious is one of those events where every corner of Falls Park is buzzing with something: live music, DJs, antique bikes, bike‑powered smoothies, short films, pump‑track laps, Bike Hub tune‑ups, the Bikers Banquet potluck… More than we could possibly list here, and that’s exactly why it feels like the bike event of the year.

There will be a vintage bike display at Bike Curious.

At its heart, it’s a community‑powered celebration of movement, creativity, and joy. It’s about showing how fun and freeing it can be to get around by bike, scooter, or on foot. I’ll be imagining a future where that joy is part of everyday life.

It’s a celebration for the curious at heart. Bring your bike, bring your friends, bring a dish. We can’t wait to see you there.

How to get to Bike Curious

By bike, of course!

The Henderson Creek Path will take you directly to Falls Park. If you’re coming from the direction of the city, you can reach the Henderson Creek Path from the Northwestern Path.

Approaching from the southwest, the Lower Opunaku Cycleway will lead you straight to Falls Park.

Who is organising Bike Curious?

We can thank Interesting Things for their creativity in dreaming up Bike Curious and making it happen. They have the support of the Auckland Urban Development Office, who are building momentum for active travel ahead of Henderson’s new Wai Horotiu walking and cycling connection.
