Overall, cycling now makes up around 25% (!) of all of London’s inner city rush hour traffic. On some routes, like Waterloo, Blackfriars, London Bridge and Southwark Bridge, bicycles already exceed cars!
The results of this recent “Central London Cycling Census” by Transport for London (their equivalent of Auckland Transport) are a major success for Mayor Boris Johnson and London’s cycling advocates and cycling transport planners. It is sure to boost the recent £913 million (!) cycling vision for London – showing that once you start doing things for cycling, numbers can tip in your favour within just a few years.
For comparison, Auckland’s inner city’s cycling numbers are woeful. But then, we still haven’t got any really high-level cycling champions among our politicians yet.
