Wondering if it’s time to become a Bike Auckland member and support our work for a more bike-friendly city? We’ve got seven new reasons why you should! Bike Barn has joined our bike shop partnership programme, and that means its seven Auckland stores now offer membership discounts of up to 25 percent when you present your membership card.
Here’s the inside story on the Bike Barn offer:
What is Bike Barn?
It’s one of the big dogs of the New Zealand cycle trade, that’s what. With 19 stores up and down the country and a very active marketing programme, chances are you’ve heard of Bike Barn already.
Bike Barn’s Auckland stores spread from Albany to Manukau; they’re all big and they all welcome experienced riders and those new to cycling. Victor Gardiner, retail operations and national business development manager for Bike Barn, says a favourite group of customers is the newbie cyclist intimidated by stores dripping with $10,000-plus Euro-bling. All Bike Barn stores have in-house mechanics and a workshop, and they’ll service any bike, regardless of where you bought it.
What kind of bikes does Bike Barn sell, and to whom?
Bike Barn leaves the cheapest end of the market to the big-box discounters and the high end to specialist stores. Its focus is the 80 percent of customers in the middle, offering proven brands and leveraging its volume purchasing to keep prices low.
One of its most popular lines is Merida, the world’s second-largest bike brand. There are also storied labels like Kona and Marin, two e-bike brands, and a huge range of clothing, component and accessory providers. Victor reckons kids’ bikes sell really well and, with Bike Barn having been in the business for 25 years, it’s not unusual for customers to come back for their third or fourth bike.
E-bikes aren’t yet the biggest category, but they’re definitely the fastest growing. Right now, says Victor, the challenge is just keeping up with demand for bikes with batteries.
Why is Bike Barn partnering with Bike Auckland?
It’s just the right thing to do, says Victor. ‘Doing good is good business,’ he explains. ‘Bike Auckland are the advocates for cycling in Auckland, and we regard ourselves as advocates too. We want to help get the message out and encourage more people to ride.’
