May Bike Breakfast – and an April round-up

Bike Auckland

Our breakfast coordinator Duncan Laidlaw reports on April activities, invites you to breakfast, and asks – how on earth is it May already?

Bikewise, my last week of April was busy but fun. It started on Monday the 25th cycling around to Mangere to join Teau and the Mangere BikeFit crew on their ride to the Otahuhu and Papatoetoe ANZAC Day ceremonies. (Check out the video below for a feel of that quiet morning ride). I enjoy seeing the Triple Teez out and about and have always been made welcome. This time I got a peek at their headquarters – a double garage with plenty of room, tools, and an awesomely inventive maintenance stand.

As a commuter, this year’s weather has been great for cycling, and I see in the paper that the golden weather is set to continue. There have been some days I have donned the wet weather gear, but it has hardly been needed. I have noticed the mornings are getting colder, but a quick ride up the hill to the ferry soon sorts that out.

Friding last week brought out more play-time, starting with a sunrise coffee (are you an earlybird? Join us!) on a still morning where the temperature was just right. It was a pity the sun didn’t put on a show, but other than that it was perfect.

Friday finished with a Bike Polo demonstration on the newly blocked-off Lower Queen Street.  It looked challenging but fun, with several amusing moments entertaining the crowd. Like all the bike groups I have come across, the polo players were friendly and welcoming.  A couple of members suggested I should have a go, with one saying there were some spare bikes as I wouldn’t want to mess up my pretty bike – but I politely declined the offer.

Rounding the week off was, of course, Open Streets.  I doubt I need to say anything as it seemed from the crowds you were all there. I can’t compare to last year, but having the full space available made it possible to get around sensibly on bikes, and it was encouraging to see rack after rack after rack full of bikes when we arrived just after midday.

I hope everyone else enjoyed seeing out April… and now that it is over, this first Thursday is Bike Breakfast again. Come along to Scarecrow Kitchen from 7:30am for good food, good coffee, and good company, as whoever shows up chats about what has been happening, what is happening and what we want to happen.

All are welcome – you don’t need to bring your bike, you don’t even have to own a bike! If you’re interested in cycling and enjoy breakfast we’d love to see you.

Where: Scarecrow Kitchen, corner of Victoria St E and Kitchener St

When: Thursday 5 May, 7.30am – 9 ish
