Major Delays on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) and Te Atatu Rd

Te Atatu Interchange Upgrade Project

Introduction

This project is widening the five existing motorway on-ramps and exits at Te Atatu and widening the Northwestern motorway (SH16) between the Te Atatu Road and Henderson Creek .

It is also enhancing existing facilities for walkers and cyclists and widening and raising the Te Atatu Road over bridge – including building a new pedestrian bridge. Works are due to be completed by December 2016.

Raising the Bridges

The Te Atatu over bridge is made up of three separate structures and these will be raised independently in the coming months.

The pedestrian bridge on the western side of the interchange will be raised between 9pm Friday 7 November and 5am Monday 10 November.

The remaining sections may be raised over the Christmas holiday period.

All works will involve continuous day and night work and require lane closures both on Te Atatu Rd and SH16.

During the day SH 16 will be restricted to one lane open in each direction. At night it will be closed in both directions.

Access to and from Te Atatu Peninsula will be restricted to one lane each way – but will remain open at all times, day and night.

The key points to note are:

  • Northwestern motorway reduced to a single lane each way under the bridge 5am to 10pm Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 November
  • Northwestern motorway closed under the bridge 10pm to 5am each night from Friday 7 November to Monday 10 Nov.
  • Te Atatu Rd reduced to a single lane each way between Te Atatu South and Te Atatu Peninsula (over the bridge) from 9pm Friday 7 November to 5am Monday 10 November.
  • Te Atatu city- bound loop on ramp closed from 9pm Friday 7 November to 5am Monday 10 November.
  • Te Atatu Rd and the Northwestern cycleway will remain open throughout the weekend.
  • Footpaths on the western side of the interchange will be closed and pedestrians will be directed to use the eastern path.
