Hot on the heels of the recent consultation on the Henderson-Massey Local Board Draft Connections Plan (now closed), comes the report from a separate but related survey by Panuku, AT, Council, and the Local Board.
The survey was carried out this time last year, identifying key local links and barriers in and around the Henderson town centre as part of Panuku’s ongoing work to reshape Henderson as an eco-town centre.
As well as being on the western train line, Henderson is blessed with a network of legacy bike paths from its Waitakere City Council days – in particular the Henderson Creek Path (which links the town centre to the NW Cycleway), and the Twin Streams paths, Opanuku and Oratia, which follow the streams southwards from the town centre.
But when those paths meet the town centre, there are some big, scary gaps across big, scary roads. And those gaps are exactly what public feedback has identified as a priority to pursue.
Check out the project page for the full report, and see the maps below. Given the clear opportunities to “ungap the map” (to borrow a great phrase from our Vancouver advocacy buddies), it’s great to see these words:
“Panuku Development Auckland will consider and incorporate feedback from this consultation into both its long-term plans for the area and a set of ‘quick wins’ that can test some of the suggestions from the community through a tactical urbanism approach.”
We’ll keep tabs on those suggested quick wins, and share them with you as soon as we know what they are! Updated: here’s the official info about the consultation, and next steps:
Auckland Transport (AT), Panuku Development Auckland, Henderson-Massey Local Board, and Auckland Council, are working together on initiatives in the Henderson area to make Henderson accessible and a better place for everyone to live, work, and play. The project partners sought public feedback on Henderson’s Future consultation from 23 April to 10 June 2018.
Feedback from Henderson’s Future consultation will be used to develop walking and cycling improvement projects within wider Henderson area. AT will do further investigation work and identify routes which needs to be prioritised first. This investigation work is likely to take some time. Further community engagement will be carried out as designs for routes are developed.
