FreeBack in New Zealand for the second time, Paul Steely White will share fresh and inspiring success stories from New York City.
As Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives (Transalt), Paul will discuss how his world-leading safe streets advocacy organisation is winning change. Come and hear about key projects and creative and coordinated campaigns that advocate for better bicycling, walking, and public transit for all New Yorkers by reclaiming the streets from cars.
Find out what Auckland can learn from NYC’s evolving street design and transportation policy – and from its strongest voice for people-friendly streets!

This free event is hosted by Bike Auckland, the non-profit organisation working for a better city for people on bikes, and is generously supported by Mott Macdonald, Precinct Properties and Warren and Mahoney Architects.
About Paul Steely White
Paul Steely White is the executive director of Transportation Alternatives (Transalt), the non-profit advocacy group that is catalysing the rapid growth of New York City’s bicycle lane network and car-free public spaces. Paul joined Transportation Alternatives in 2004 after seven years as Projects Director for the NYC-based Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.
Under Paul’s leadership, Transportation Alternatives has released dozens of breakthrough studies and pioneered a host of new advocacy strategies. Paul has an MS in Environmental Science from the University of Montana at Missoula, where in addition to his coursework, he worked to spark a local flowering in bicycle culture and infrastructure. Paul has appeared hundreds of times in local and national media, and has shared his advocacy strategies with diverse audiences around the world.
