SUMMARY:Papakura Repair Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Papakura Innovation Event #2 focuses on recycling and repairing… On Saturday 5 August\, from 10-4 in the Papakura town centre\, there’ll be lots of fun and awesome things to see and learn and do. \nBike Repair with Mr T\nPrestigious local bike man\, Teau Aiturau (commonly known as ‘Mr. T’) will be leading a group of people helping you to repair and maintain your bike.\nBYO your bike and learn how to repair it – fixing punctures\, tinkering with the gears\, tightening the spokes. Learn how to maintain your bike for longer life\, and have a safety check to ensure you have a longer life yourself! \nUpcycling with The Roots\nAlso on the same day: an upcycling activity\, using recycled materials to make cool things. The Roots: Creative Entrepreneurs\, Waikare and Shardae – the upcycling masters – will be there\, teaching you how to make and decorate cool looking windmills and planters from old drink bottles.  Waikare will also be giving demos of how to make outdoor seating using old tires and rope. And if you have any empty 1.5L / 2.25L soda bottles lying around\, The Roots could always use a few more. \nAbout Repair Cafe\nRepair Cafe Auckland is a community-led repair workshop\, where people help each other to fix broken things that would normally be thrown away. Have a go at fixing things yourself with tools and guidance from Andrew and the rest of the community. Everything from buttons on shirts to umbrellas to video game controllers and more. And if you tell Andrew what you want to fix via email (gapoceania@gmail.com)\, he will see if he can find parts to cannibalise.\nProudly brought to you by Meshed\, Triple teez\, The Roots: Creative Entrepreneurs\, Bike Repair\, InnovatePapakura and the Papakura Local Board.

SUMMARY:Envision Your Auckland
DESCRIPTION:Come along and put your very own mastermind to good use in designing Generation Zero’s City Centre Masterplan. \nEnjoy a Kokako filter coffee/ hot chocolate or fizz from Karma Cola and disclose your transport woes. We want your ideas and vision of what your ideal low carbon city would look like – as\, after all\, it will be affecting you. \nYou will also hear from the brilliant minds of Kathryn King\, Manager of Walking\, Cycling and Road Safety at Auckland Transport\, and Richard Hills\, Auckland Councillor for North Shore. \nSince Auckland Council laid out its own City Centre Masterplan (back in 2012) for what the next 20 years of development will look like\, the number of pedestrians on Queen St has doubled. And though the city centre’s population was projected to hit 45\,000 by 2032\, it’s already set to exceed that this year – 15 years ahead of predicted. \nWith the original plan up for consultation next year\, we reckon it needs some serious work in catering to the ever changing and growing population of people who use the CBD in their daily lives. \nSo if you already live\, work and party in downtown Tamaki Makaurau\, now’s your chance to bring your transport\, housing and spatial design critiques and solutions to the table. \nDay and Time: Thursday 24 August\, 6 – 7.30pm \nLocation: Room ALR5/421W-301 at the University of Auckland (Architecture Building\, 26 Symonds St) \nThis event is part of Ecoweek at UoA

SUMMARY:Bike Breakfast – September
DESCRIPTION:What a busy month for bikes it’s been! The rollercoaster that is this year’s election season saw a range of bike-friendly policies and statements released from most of the major players. \nAnd closer to home\, on Thursday evening 7 September\, NZTA and AT will be announcing the coming transformations for cycling around Tamaki Drive and Ngapipi Road (at the Grid in Wynyard Quarter – details here ). \nSo why not start the day right at Bike Auckland’s Bike Breakfast? \nBike Breakfast is a great place to shoot the breeze about all things bike-related. Everyone’s welcome – you don’t have to belong to any particular bike tribe\, and we love casual drop-ins as much as our regular faces. Pop in\, stay as long as you like\, get the bike goss\, and then head off to your day. \nScarecrow has tasty warming food and great coffee\, and the conversations that go on around the table are a perfect match. \nBike Breakfast happens on the first Thursday of every month at Scarecrow Kitchen on the corner of Victoria St and Kitchener Street in the CBD.

SUMMARY:The Future of Tamaki Drive & Orakei Basin: Unveiling the Cycleway Projects
DESCRIPTION:A bunch of major cycling improvements are about to converge on Auckland’s busiest and most beautiful bike route\, Tamaki Drive. How will they all fit together? \nCome along on Thursday 7 September and find out! \nBike Auckland has invited project managers from Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency along to present the big interlocking projects that will transform this route: \n• the new Tamaki Drive Cycle Route from Ngapipi Rd to The Strand (this is the one we pushed strongly for a rethink on… watch this space!) \n• widening the Ngapipi Bridge to make room for cycling and improve passage for pedestrians \n• and the recently announced Section 4 of the Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive Shared Path\, from Orakei Station to Tamaki Drive\, which will hug the coast along Ngapipi R \n• plus updates on related projects in the area. \nThere’ll be time for questions and answers – and a chance to rub shoulders with bike-minded people who are moving Auckland along. \nCash bar + complimentary nibbles. \nSpace is limited\, so please RSVP ASAP! \nA note on location: there are multiple Grid/ Generator locations\, so please rely on the street address for wayfinding. Also – Madden St is currently closed at the Beaumont end; access via Halsey St.

SUMMARY:Bike Chat with Tyler Golly: Backwards to Slo-Mo to Fast Forward!
DESCRIPTION:Edmonton has come a long way in a short while for cycling. After a couple of false starts\, this Canadian city the size of Auckland is now creating a full-scale downtown grid of protected cycleways virtually overnight – building at lightning speed\, and all in one go! \nThe big question for Auckland: could we see the same kind of fast-forward progress here?? \nCome and learn from our special guest Tyler Golly\, who headed sustainable transportation for the City of Edmonton and developed the Downtown Bike Grid with Stantec design consultancy. \nTuesday 3 October \nEllen Melville Hall\, Freyberg Place \n5.30 – 7.30pm \nTyler’s presentation will be followed by a lively panel discussion\, led by Auckland’s Design Champion Ludo Campbell-Reid: \n\nKathryn King\, Manager of Walking\, Cycling and Road Safety at Auckland Transport\nBarb Cuthbert\, Chair & Spokesperson at advocacy group Bike Auckland\nJeremy Hansen\, Editor of the urban weekly\, Paperboy\n\nComplimentary drinks & nibbles before and after the event – RSVP via Eventbrite. \nThis event is brought to you by Bike Auckland\, the non-profit organisation working for a better city for bikes\, in conjunction with Auckland Council’s Auckland Design Office. \nMore about Tyler Golly \nAs one of Edmonton’s leading voices for sustainable transportation\, Tyler designs systems that get whole communities moving. He’s helped craft street design guides\, walkability strategies\, transportation master plans\, and transit-oriented development guidelines. Motivated by the mounting evidence that active transportation has benefits far beyond the individual\, he has delivered transportation solutions that have improved safety\, accessibility\, and mobility for people of all ages and abilities. Tyler has won awards across North America and led public outreach initiatives in print\, online\, and in video. His experience in the public and private sectors helps him see urban transportation problems from an integrated perspective requiring collaborative decision making. He’s also one of Western Canada’s leading Lego enthusiasts.

SUMMARY:Drop-in Bike Skills & Maintenance: Mangere
DESCRIPTION:This session will be happening at Mangere Centre Park on Thursday 12th October from 6pm – 8pm. \nPark in the Centre Park carpark and look for our instructor team who will be set up there. The ‘Bike skills’ session will take place in Centre Park\, while the maintenance side of things is happening in the garage at the back of Mangere Community House\, 141 Robertson Rd. You can easily walk between the two. \nAt the session there will be separate ‘learn to ride’ instruction for anyone who has never ridden a bike\, while other participants will practice skills such as changing gears\, braking\, bike control\, signalling and more. \nA mechanic will also be there to answer any maintenance questions\, including how to remove a wheel\, how to adjust brakes and how to best look after a bike. \nThe drop-in session is a flexible format where you can take part in cycle skills lessons\, bike maintenance\, or a little of both. Unable to stay for the full time? No sweat\, stay for as little or as long as you like. It’s also a good opportunity to come along and ask one of our regional coordinators for more info on riding locally. \nSo\, if you are keen to master the art of riding a bike or want to learn to fix a flat… pop in. \nBikes are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. We don’t want you to miss a moment of the fun\, so it is best to be there early. \nNo need to book for these sessions.
