SUMMARY:Bike Breakfast - June
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again… when the frosty starts and foggy mornings are joined by later sunrises and earlier sunsets. Time to break out the warmer gear for riding\, consider your wet weather options and brighten up your ride so others can see you.\nSpeaking of brightening up: the sun rises around 7:30am\, just in time to join Bike Auckland’s convivial Bike Breakfast!\nEveryone’s welcome to Bike Breakfast – you don’t have to belong to any particular bike tribe\, and we love casual drop-ins as much as our regular faces. Pop in\, stay as long as you like\, get the bike goss\, and then head off to your day. Scarecrow has tasty warming food and great coffee\, and the conversations that go on around the table are a perfect match.\nBike Breakfast happens on the first Thursday of every month at Scarecrow Kitchen on the corner of Victoria St and Kitchener Street in the CBD.

SUMMARY:From Oakland to Auckland...The Insider's Guide to Changing Your City
DESCRIPTION:Urban advocacy groups are playing a key role in transforming Auckland – so how can we get even smarter about getting stuff done?\nJoin us for an inspiring and convivial discussion on exactly that question with sustainable transportation legend Jeffrey Tumlin.\nTickets are limited\, and may be standing room only. RSVP here ASAP!\nJeff last visited in 2015 for a wide-ranging Auckland Conversations lecture. This time\, settle in for a more intimate and dynamic chat with the man who’s described the bicycle as ‘a primary component of the future of all great cities.’\nFresh from creating a brand new and well-balanced Dept of Transportation in car-centric Oakland California\, he will share a wealth of experience from cities he’s worked with: Seattle\, Vancouver\, Moscow and Abu Dhabi\, among others. It’s all about integration and quality of life – as he asks in his widely viewed TEDx talk\, ‘Shouldn’t human happiness be a primary performance metric for transportation networks?’\nAfter Jeff speaks\, Generation Zero\, Greater Auckland and Bike Auckland will unveil our current initiatives for Auckland – and then we’ll crack into a lively shared discussion. Bring us your best questions!\n• What’s the most important conversation to be having about cities right now?\n• How do we get our stories into that conversation?\n• How can we make sure our values are reflected in the way our city is built and run?\n• Will we see a 21st C Auckland in the 21st C?\n• Do we have to keep talking about parking spaces?\nCash bar and nibbles before\, during\, and after the discussion. As with our visit from the Dutch Cycling Embassy\, we think interest in this event may exceed the venue’s capacity. So\, RSVP here and show up promptly on the night to grab your spot!

SUMMARY:Bike Kaipatiki Social Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Kaipatiki team invites you on a social bike ride to explore the less frequently travelled upper reaches of Kaipatiki!\nStarting from and returning to Columbus Coffee at Smales Farm\, Takapuna\, our route will take in:\n– A close-up of some remarkable architecture\n– Weird sculptures in a wetlands renovation\n– Bush scenes that will make you think you’re in backblocks NZ\n– A strange subterranean tunnel more reminiscent of a Hobbit movie\n– A stunning lake\n– High-performance sport in action\n– Bucolic scenes you surely wouldn’t expect in the heart of a metropolis.\nCome and join us on a voyage of discovery into parts of the Shore you perhaps never knew existed\, or at least probably haven’t seen from the saddle of a bike.\nStarting at 8am from Smales (where you may want to drive to with your bike on a rack)\, we’ll make our way north using as many off-road paths as we can. Unfortunately\, of necessity there will be some parts of the route where we’re on-road sharing with cars\, so you need to be comfortable about riding on the road. There will also be some hills\, but we’ve kept the gradients as easy as possible.\nYou’ll be in a group with a ride leader and a Tail-End-Charlie who will ensure we all keep together as safely as possible. If you lack a bit of fitness or road confidence – don’t worry. We’ll all stay together to maximise the enjoyment. This isn’t a race\, and there will be plenty of stops to look at the attractions and catch a breather.\nWe’ll ride north for an hour or so\, arriving at Altura Cafe on Douglas Alexander Parade where the team from Bike Albany are welcome to join us for a coffee. After suitable refreshments we’ll return to Smales via the same route. No problems if some participants would like to return home independently from Altura.\nHope you can join us – will be good to get a ride in before winter starts to bite. And the weather? The odd shower won’t put us off\, but if it’s thoroughly miserable we’ll cancel. Keep an eye on the Bike Kaipatiki FB page for details. See you at Smales from 7.30am for a pre-ride coffee\, to make a start at 8am.

SUMMARY:Papakura Repair Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Papakura Innovation Event #2 focuses on recycling and repairing… On Saturday 5 August\, from 10-4 in the Papakura town centre\, there’ll be lots of fun and awesome things to see and learn and do. \nBike Repair with Mr T\nPrestigious local bike man\, Teau Aiturau (commonly known as ‘Mr. T’) will be leading a group of people helping you to repair and maintain your bike. \nBYO your bike and learn how to repair it – fixing punctures\, tinkering with the gears\, tightening the spokes. Learn how to maintain your bike for longer life\, and have a safety check to ensure you have a longer life yourself! \nUpcycling with The Roots\nAlso on the same day: an upcycling activity\, using recycled materials to make cool things. The Roots: Creative Entrepreneurs\, Waikare and Shardae – the upcycling masters – will be there\, teaching you how to make and decorate cool looking windmills and planters from old drink bottles.  Waikare will also be giving demos of how to make outdoor seating using old tires and rope. And if you have any empty 1.5L / 2.25L soda bottles lying around\, The Roots could always use a few more. \nAbout Repair Cafe\nRepair Cafe Auckland is a community-led repair workshop\, where people help each other to fix broken things that would normally be thrown away. Have a go at fixing things yourself with tools and guidance from Andrew and the rest of the community. Everything from buttons on shirts to umbrellas to video game controllers and more. And if you tell Andrew what you want to fix via email (gapoceania@gmail.com)\, he will see if he can find parts to cannibalise. \nProudly brought to you by Meshed\, Triple teez\, The Roots: Creative Entrepreneurs\, Bike Repair\, InnovatePapakura and the Papakura Local Board.
