SUMMARY:Bike Auckland Annual General Meeting (AGM)
DESCRIPTION:Bike Auckland members & supporters are warmly invited to our Annual General Meeting (AGM)\, which not only takes care of key business\, but also famously highlights the year’s most exciting developments for people on bikes & gives you a peek of what’s on the horizon. We will have presentations from our Chair\, Karen Hormann as well as key committee members and the wider Bike Auckland whānau. \nAll roles on the board will be up for reelection as an agenda item at the AGM. To put yourself or somebody else forward for a role on the Board\, contact us in advance with your nomination for Chair\, Deputy Chair\, Secretary\, or Treasurer. You can also suggest items to add to the agenda. Contact us at: info@bikeauckland.org.nz. The current Chair Karen Hormann\, Deputy Chair Duncan Laidlaw and Treasurer Juan Espinosa have confirmed they will stand again for their respective positions in 2023. Our Secretary position is currently vacant. \nPlease note that although we welcome anyone to attend the AGM\, if you want to be able to vote you need to be a registered Bike Auckland member and attending in person. You can sign up as a member through our website. We currently have an AGM special – sign up for a year here and get three months free. \nWe appreciate your support to help us to keep doing all that we do for people on bikes in Tāmaki Makaurau. \nSave the date\, and RSVP via Humanitix below so we can keep in touch with attendees via email. \nLink to Humanitix \nWhen: Sunday 19 November\, 1pm – 4pm\nDoors open 12.30pm\nWhere: Studio One Toi Tū\, 1 Ponsonby Road\, Grey Lynn\, Auckland 1010 \nFAQs \nHow the day will go \n\n1pm – AGM starts at Studio One Toi Tū.\n2.15pm – AGM formalities finish and group ride starts (optional)\n3.45pm – Arrive at The Flagship Education Centre (optional) where beverages\, including those of the alcoholic kind\, and nibbles will be available\n\nIf you don’t want to do the group ride you can meet us at the Flagship at 3.45pm.  \nAlternatively\, feel free to help the team pack down\, or hang out after the AGM before heading down to The Flagship. \nCan I join the AGM online instead? \nBookmark this link\, and it’ll magically turn into the live-stream link on the day! \nWhere’s the bike parking? \nPark your bike at the back of Studio One in the courtyard. Come through the vehicle entrance. The gate will be shut during the event so your bike won’t be visible from the street\, but we recommend you still bring your own bike lock. \nIf you’re coming to the Flagship\, there are Locky Docks at the entrance of the Jellicoe Street car park\, or bring it onto the deck where we’ll be. \nWhat’s the bike ride going to be like? \nWe invite you to join us on a guided group ride through Auckland Central. It will mostly be flat and down hill\, the ride will be split 50/50 on the road and protected cycleways. We will have many points to stop and reconvene\, ride slowly together in a group\, and have amazing ride marshalls to guide you during the ride. Please dress for any type of Auckland weather! \nIf bad weather is expected\, we will assess and let you know via email and via the Facebook event (so please register on Humanitix) if the ride component is going ahead. \n \nWhat do the board do\, and what’s the time commitment? \nThe core board role of attending meetings\, reading the material before and after\, and liaising with the board and crew between meetings probably averages 5-6 hours per month. All board member roles and co-opted board positions are voluntary.  \nFind out more about each of them have a read on these blogs: \nChair \nDeputy chair \nTreasurer \nBoard member \nWe would also like each board member to take on some kind of project over their tenure\, which could encompass board policy work\, advocacy initiatives or supporting the crew or volunteers in some capacity. This would be dependent on skills and what’s going on – approximately 10-20 hours per annum. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to us at events@bikeauckland.org.nz\, otherwise we’ll see you on the day!

SUMMARY:Bicycle-part Fence Design and Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:Join master upcycler and sculptor Andrew Hall in this one-off workshop to design a fence constructed from bicycle parts. \nIn this workshop\, learn tips and tricks when dealing with metals. You are welcome to have a go\, gaining metal working skills such as cutting and drilling. \nAs a group\, we will get creative to assemble random parts into a cohesive whole. The fence will become a functional feature at the entrance to the EcoMatters ‘Lookout’ building. \nLater in the afternoon\, you are welcome to stay and watch Andrew weld the assembled parts into the final structure. \nMax 15\, ages 12+ \nABOUT\nAndrew Hall is a well-known West Auckland sculptor who has delivered creative assemblage workshops for both children and adults\, working with Auckland Council and Corbans Estate Arts Centre. Andrew has been getting creative with waste ever since he was a child. His quirky\, funny and sometimes outrageous sculptures have been exhibited and collected. ‘I call myself a master of spontaneous multi-dimensional assemblage because that’s exactly what it is\, it’s automatic’. \nImage: Tucson bike fence\, 2010. SUMMARY:Eastern Suburbs Sustainable Garden Trail by Bike
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable gardens by sustainable transport. What could be better? \nBike Eastern Suburbs is excited to be involved with the Eastern Bays Sustainable Gardens Trail. We have organised a group ride to visit several of the gardens finishing with refreshments at the newly opened Sunhill Garden Centre and Cafe. E-bikes and analogue bikes are welcome. \nWe meet at Bionic Bikes (244 Orakei Rd) at 9.45am on Saturday 24th February. If you want to hire a bike from them\, they open at 9.00 (allow at least 30 minutes to get fitted and sorted). We will ride up the shared path via Purewa Cemetery\, then down to gardens in Kohimarama\, St Heliers\, Glendowie and (if time permits) St Johns. The route is about 18km and unfortunately there are hills involved. \nIt is a no-drop ride so we will wait for everyone to regroup at regular intervals. We estimate it will take around three hours (depending on how amazing the gardens are). If faster riders want to leave the slower ones and take in a couple more gardens\, then that can be worked out on the day. Finish is at Sunhill Garden Centre and Cafe at approximately 1.00pm where you will be able to get a complimentary coffee or other drink courtesy of our friends at Bike Auckland and we can talk about the gardens we have seen. After that\, feel free to head home\, explore more gardens on the trail or plan a route to take in the rest of the gardens on Sunday.\nThe route is partly on road\, but we have tried to keep it to the less busy ones and use cycle paths where possible. We will have a lead rider and a tail-end Charlie who will bring up the rear. \nWhat to bring: \n\nA bike (of course)\nMoney – $2.00 coin per garden.\nWater\nSunscreen\nA sense of humour\, and a willingness to go with the flow. This is our first time too!\n\nRules: We like to keep it simple\, friendly and rely on common sense to keep everyone happy. However\, as this event is open to everyone\, we need to outline a few things that may seem obvious\, just in case someone leaves their common sense at home. \n\nPlease give your name and phone number to the leader in case we lose you. If you want to leave the ride\, tell the leader.\nIf you are riding with the group\, stay in the group. Please don’t pass the leader\, you might miss a turnoff.\nEntry to each garden is $2.00 cash. Please respect the wishes of the garden owners and follow any instructions.\nObey the road rules. Stop at Stop signs and red lights.\nGive way to everyone on the shared paths\, even if they are in the way.\nMake sure your bike is in good working order and wear your helmet.\nLiability: This is a free event\, run by volunteers\, held on public paths and roads. All the organisers are doing is organising a route and guiding service. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety and the safety of those around you at all times. The organisers take safety seriously but accept no responsibility for any injuries\, accidents or losses.\nWe will have a small first aid kit and the ride leader is trained in first aid.\n\nFAQ\nWhat if it’s raining? \nIt’s summer in Auckland. We get wet\, then it stops raining and we get dry. If it’s forecast to be torrential rain and high winds we will cancel. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for notification in the morning. \nWhat about security for my bike? \nYou will probably be able to walk down the driveway and leave your bike off the road at most gardens. There are helpers at the gardens who will mind the bikes for us. Bring a lock if you are at all concerned. Outside Sunhill there are bike racks or you can bring your bike into the cafe courtyard. \nCan I bring my kids? \nIt’s 18km and some riding on the road\, so if they are small enough to carry them on your bike\, that’s fine\, otherwise it’s probably only suited to kids 13 and over who are experienced. \nI’ve never ridden in a group\, what if I can’t keep up? \nThis is about the experience\, it’s not a race. We will be riding at a slow pace and will stop frequently to make sure everyone stays together and we cross intersections safely. If you do feel unsafe or want to pull out for any reason\, please tell the leader so we don’t look for you. \nWhat if I want to ride fast and see more gardens? \nNo problems\, just tell the leader you are leaving the group so we don’t send out a search party\, and we will see you at Sunhill at around 1.00. \nWhat if I love one particular garden and want to spend more time there? \nWe have estimated about 20-25 minutes at each garden\, but if everyone is engrossed\, we will take longer. If one really takes your fancy\, you can spend the whole of Sunday there.
