SUMMARY:The Big Bike Debate
DESCRIPTION:Does Auckland look better on a bike? Bike Auckland hosts a celebrity comedy debate that aims to settle the question once and for all! \nWith more Aucklanders on bikes than ever before\, are we all set to freewheel into the future? Or is there something about the subject of cycling that grinds people’s gears? \nWith MC Wallace Chapman in charge\, two teams will face off with logic and laughs in front of a cabaret audience. Flying the chopper flag in favour are Michèle A’Court\, Livi Reihana and Tom Sainsbury. Putting on the brakes for the ‘Nah’ team are Jeremy Elwood\, Hamish Parkinson and Justine Smith. The winner will be decided by audience acclaim. \nTickets include the debate\, musical entertainment\, a sit-down dinner and drinks\, plus after-dark access to MOTAT’s ‘Changing Gear’ exhibition on the history of the bicycle – all in support of a great cause. \nEveryone’s welcome at this rollicking and robust evening\, whether you’re a heartfelt hard-pedalling supporter\, a dabbling frocks-on-bikes type\, a deep-seated doubter\, a frothing hater\, or merely bike-curious. \nThis event is hosted by Bike Auckland with sponsorship and support from Auckland Transport Cycling\, Brothers Beer\, Toto Pizza\, Plantlab.nz\, and Yealands Family Wines.

SUMMARY:Smart City and K' Road: Insights from Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:On Monday the 9th of July the K’ Road Business Association is extremely excited to bring you: \nFrom a Trickle to a Stream: Achieving a Major Bike Mode Shift in Canada\nA discussion with Dale Bracewell\n\n*Pre-event nibbles and drinks at the Station Bar from 5:00pm. Event starts at 6pm* \nCycling is one of the fast growing modes of transport throughout the world\, and Canada has been a leader in developing cycling infrastructure in new world cities. Montréal kicked this off by developing protected cycleway networks 30 years ago\, while English-speaking Canada followed decades later. \nA variety of approaches have been taken\, from the Calgary Cycle Track Pilot and the Edmonton fast implementation of an ‘adaptable permanent’ downtown cycleway grid\, both of which delivered downtown protected cycleway networks very quickly. Vancouver and Victoria took a more traditional approach of developing connected downtown protected cycleway networks one street at a time as permanent installations. \nDale Bracewell was the Active Transportation Manager at the City of Vancouver (now the Transportation Planning Manager) and played an integral part in this transformation. Dale will be talking to the K’ Road community about cycling in Canadian cities with a focus on the engagement journey with the community\, businesses and other stakeholders. \nEveryone welcome who’s interested in how cities get from here to there. Register at Eventbrite to reserve your place.

SUMMARY:Cycle Chic Film Night #1
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by the Big Bike Film Night\, a programme of short cycling films on the big screen\, selected to inspire\, encourage and celebrate women who love to bike. Showcasing women who push boundaries\, are courageous\, and are advocates for change; all through the power of the humble bike. It’s the ‘thinking cyclists’ film collection that ALL genders will connect with and enjoy. \nThe Tuesday 14 August screening starts at 6pm\, and will finish shortly after 7:40pm. There is also a Wednesday showing. \nTickets are available from The Big Bike Film Night website\, or by phoning Brett on 021 748 441. \nDoor sales at the Academy Cinema on the night subject to availability. \nThe line-up features eleven carefully selected short films\, from emerging and established independent film-makers. A magical journey of colour and creativity by an artistic mountain biker; a New Zealand female road cyclist who believes in the power of bicycles\, an enthralling film set in big city America on two (in their own words) ‘bad-ass BMXers’ following their passion; a bicycle store with a unique point of difference; a heart-warming story about migrant women in Amsterdam finding their way into a new society and the liberating feeling of riding a bicycle; and a documentary that focuses on three Nepali women breaking through cultural barriers to spread their love of mountain biking.
